Developmental language disorders are a type of speech, language, and communication need that often goes undiagnosed with no obvious cause (Gorman, 2023).

DLD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that tends to run in families.

There are about 2 in 30 children who have DLD which is around 2 children in every classroom.

DLD affects a child’s reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.

Younger children with DLD tend to be late to putting words into a sentence format, make grammatical errors often, and have difficulty following directions because they don’t understand them.

DLD and dyslexia are separate disorders but they do have similar qualities. However, dyslexia and DLD have been found to be co occurring.

DLD happens to co-occur with difficulty in math, anxiety, and depression.

People often confuse language and speech. This is important to clarify to teachers and parents of these children. SLP’s should explain to the parent/teacher the difference in order to best help their child with a language disorder.

It is important to use Dynamic Assessment to see the child's skills as well as their learning potential.

Dynamic assessments help tell the difference between a language disorder and a language difference.

Treatment is typically provided by speech-language pathologists.

Treatment should include:

Acquire missing elements of grammar

Expand their understanding of words

Following directions

Developing conversational skills

Improving speaking, writing, and reading.

Research has shown that doing language intervention with children who have DLD improves their spoken language and their academic skills.

We want to use different techniques such as modeling, expansion, recast, imitation, etc.

Since there is a high risk of academic and social failure with DLD, a majority of children were not identified and did not receive services. DLD is a very under identified disorder.

Due to this under identification, there should be tools to aid in identification. There are language screenings that can be provided. This should be provided at the schools.

Collaboration is important for intervention and identification of children with DLD. It is important for teachers and SLP's to collaborate on the children they have in the classroom. They can then both work together to provide a plan of action for the child that best suits the individual.

McGregor, K. K. (2020).
