Inez Deiter, une Amérindienne témoigne brièvement de ce qu'elle a vécu en décrivant les coups qu'elle a reçu. Après des années de négotiations et de procès individuels, cette nouvelle ébranle la communauté Amérindienne.
Depuis la fin du 19ème siècle jusqu'à la fin du 20ème, les Amérindiens ont été emmenés dans ces pensions qui étaient gerées par l'Église catholique.
Phil Fontaine, un Chef de tribu représentant des “1^st nations” (les Amérindiens du Canada) annonce son soulagement. Il est annoncé que jusqu'a 80 000 anciens élèves recevront une compensation, et que les individus qui sont aujourd'hui agés de plus de 65 ans peuvent demander un paiment plus rapide.
Le problème selon le reportage, c'est que cet accord ne fait pas de différence entre les degrés de maltraitance. Native American : We were hit by the Americans if we don’t respect the rules. For exemple, when we talked in our native language or practiced natives activities. They were wash by us. We were forced to stay alone all the night, in front of a cemetery. They wanted to traumatized us. We didn’t have a mind of our own. We didn’t have names, we were call by numbers. During all our childhood we were taunted, we were mistreated, we were put down in order to denigrate our culture.

They prevent us from having liberty.

Interviewer : To this days, this is imaginable to hear that.

So, if I understood, you didn’t have liberty and you were forced to think like Americans. We can call that cultural assimilation.
