Gunning - Dramatizing: putting vocabulary in the context of simple skits adds interest and reality.
Social Class - The higher the students social class, the more engaged they are in the learning process. Students from low socioeconomic status families with few resources tend to start school less prepared for the academic experience.
Cultural Capital - There is a disconnect between teacher and student experiences. Athletics were important but some teachers did not seem to realize the majority of Hispanic students could not afford to participate.

1. Gunning - Techniques for teaching words – Graphic Organizers, Semantic Maps, etc.

2. Cultural Capital and it's Influence on Student Engagement: Know: School culture: Language, norms, values/beliefs and assumptions. Cultural Capital: Knowledge, meanings and symbolic markers. Remind: My mother and how hard she worked to make sure that we got the best education we could have. Her strong work ethic and determination for her children's rights. Wonder: What would the outcome be for other races? Think: We need to appreciate the cultural capital of Hispanic students and bring that into the classroom. Especially where we are located.

3. Social Class and Student Engagement: Know: Social Class is a form of economic status. Remind: True North - Get on the right course, proceed in the right direction: Transformative leaders know their 'true North" and non negotiables and in the I ght of public disdain press forward toward a system of education embracing equity, democracy, and social justice. Wonder: Why is it so hard to have great schools in low SES? I know money has to do with it, but if education should be free, why can't it be top notch? Think: Having ethic of care as the foundation for creating student success can help to build critical relation-ships with students and lead to better student engagement.
