The first picture shows many Mesopotamian gods, because there are so many gods this tells us that the Mesopotamians were Polytheistic. These gods were worshiped, since the Sumerians and Akkadians that in order for them to stay safe they had to repsect these gods. The second picture, shows the Sumerian writing language, which is Cunieform. This form of writing is very interesting.

Some key features of a Mesopotamian society are, ziggurats which are religious civic centers. That means they had to have priests too. Something else are the kings, without kings all societies would be crazy. Everyone would do whatever they wanted. Another thing could be farming, farming was important because that was their main source of food. Also, that let them trade and develop new tools.

Core Questions #2-Mesopotamian's believed in polytheism, the belief in more than one god. They thought that the gods oversaw their well-being. They also thought that if the gods were happy, they would have good weather, good food, and a good day. When they didn’t give gifts or preform their rituals to their gods, they were “giving” in return bad weather, bad food and water, and they had a horrible day.

Core Question #3- Religion in Mesopotamia was different in some cities but intertwined in other cities. Most Mesopotamian cities believed that they were protected by a specific god who looked after its interests. For example, Sumerians had a different religion than most of Mesopotamia. They believed that the rulers of Sumer were chosen by the gods to carry out their deeds. In another Mesopotamia city Akkad, they intertwined with other Mesopotamian cities, that they were protected by a specific god.

Closing Question-Religion differs a lot from Ancient Mesopotamia to America today. (The highest practiced religion in American is Christianity, so that is the religion I will be comparing.) Back in Ancient Mesopotamia, they practiced polytheism, the belief in more than one god, a lot more than Americans do today. Ancient Mesopotamian’s believed that the gods needed praise and gifts, so they could get good weather, food, and have a good day. Now, we believe that there is only one god, called God, and we pray to him for certain things to happen, such as hoping somebody gets better, praying to live a good life, etc. Some things the religions have in common thought is that we both worship at least one god, and we have worshiping temples where we go to pray to our god.

I learned lots of things about religion and government that include, how they were intertwined. It talks about that the king was chosen by god. That has to do with the religion and government. Another key point is, on the second page it states that they are polytheistic. After that, it states that they believe that gods and goddesses were responsible for arable land and the well-being of people. Lastly, I learned that temple priests take care of the statues inside. They statues inside are suppose to represent the many gods and goddesses. The priests would give them food and water, and offer burning incense.

I originally thought that there was one supreme king who ruled over the whole of Mesopotamia. The final key detail that I learned was that It was believed that to keep the gods happy, you must offer them food and drink. I found this interesting because I didn't think that people practiced this for thousands of years after Mesopotamia.

I also didn’t know that they believed that the gods and goddesses were responsible for the well-being of the people. That last thing that I found most interesting was that each city worked hard to keep their gods happy because they were afraid that they would get angry and punish them. Those are the things I found most interesting.

Another thing I learned was how there was a class system in Mesopotamia, wealthy businessmen, landowners, and government workers; artisans, farm workers; and slaves.

Take it to Writing-I learned that religion in Mesopotamia is very different from today. For one example, religion in a Mesopotamian society was very important to the city. Most cities practiced polytheism, where they believed in more than one god. They also believed that the gods overwatch them and were responsible for the inhabitants on the city's wellbeing. This led each city-state to believe another point. When the gods were enjoying themselves (bringing the city food, water, and a good day), the citizens believed they did something right. If the city experienced a drought, they brought it upon themselves to worship and give gifts to the water god, in order to get water for their land. For another reason, religion and government differed between major city states. Most cities believed in one religion altogether, while major city-states had their own beliefs. One major city-state that did this was Sumer. Also, many major city-states also had a class system.

Opening Question:The first picture seems to be some of the Mesopotamian gods. Since there are so many, this tells me that the Mesopotamians were Polytheistic. These gods were well worshiped, since the Sumerians and Akkadians thought their well being depended on the gods. Offerings were provided and incense was lit. This was so the gods would stay happy and not be angry at the Mesopotamians. The second picture shows King Ur-Gur worshiping Enzu, a Mesopotamian god. This shows that gods were above kings in social class, and kings respected gods too. To the people below kings, the king would seem in highest position, but he is actually one level below gods, and must follow their advice, orders, and must also provide offerings.Core Questions:1. A society is an organized group with established rules and traditions. This definitely makes Mesopotamia a society. Sumerians and Akkadians were Polytheistic. Religion is a big part of society, and Mesopotamia had that. Writing also makes a society, and cuneiform was what their written language was. They even had a government and social classes. First came the ruler, then the wealthy, then landowners, government workers, artisans, farmers, scribes, and slaves. All of these aspects lead up to making Mesopotamia a civilization!2. As I stated before, the Mesopotamians were Polytheistic, and believed in many gods. They kept their gods happy, since the Sumerians and Akkadians thought that their well-being depended on the gods. Food and drink was provided to the gods, and temple priests would light incense. They also respected what their gods gave them. The water, land, even mud-bricks and plows had a god, so they respected what they had. 3. Religion and government in Mesopotamia were definitely intertwined. Sumerians believed that their gods chose their kings, which is a great example of how close religion and government was. They believed that kingship could be passed from father to son, but they mainly followed who their gods told them to. Closing Question:Religion and government is not one and the same in the USA today. Unlike Mesopotamians, the United States keeps religion and government far apart. Mesopotamians all believed in mainly the same gods, but today in America, the culture and religion is very diverse, and the government would go out of control if all the religions tried to have power of the USA.Take It to Writing:I learned many things about Mesopotamia's religion and government. The two were intertwined, and Sumerians and Akkadians listened closely to their gods for guidance on kings and rulers. They were also Polytheistic, as they believed in many gods. There were gods for even petty things. Mesopotamians kept their gods happy for their own well-being. Mesopotamia also had a social class system, separating kings and gods from slaves, farmers, and other workers. These are some facts that I learnt about Mesopotamia's religion and goverment!Opening Question:Life must have been very different before writing was created. Cuneiform was the first writing, and without it, life in Mesopotamia would not be very fun. Keeping track of trade would have been hard without written language. Lets say someone brought in 5 pairs of shoes and 10 bags of gold. If many people kept coming in and out of trade, it would be impossible to keep this all in memory! So, cuneiform was a way to make life easier for Sumerians and Akkadians. Without it, the Mesopotamians would have to keep track of everything in our heads, and then they would explode, and there would be no Mesopotamia! Anyway, I think this is what life would be like before cuneiform.Core Questions:1. The progression of Mesopotamian writing was very drastic. It went from very detailed pictures to odd looking pictures that are near impossible to figure out. An ox, for example, went from a precise painting to a oddly shaped letter. There was a huge change in not such a big amount of time. This is how cuneiform developed.2. The letter tells me that parents in Mesopotamia were sort of protective of their children, and education was valued. Parents definitely wanted children to study and go to school, but let them wander freely sometimes. This is not as protective as today.3. Without all of the archaeologists' hard work, we wouldn't have know much of anything about ancient Mesopotamia! For example, the letter from the father to son told us a lot about the culture in Mesopotamia. Without some findings, we couldn't even know that they created cuneiform. Without all this information, our thirst for knowing more about Mesopotamia may never have been fulfilled!Closing Question:Written language isn't just important, it is a necessity! Without writing, we would have to memorize everything. We couldn't to complex math, have written rules, or anything important to a society! We wouldn't even have books, and everyone loves reading! Today, we can read, write, and learn using written language.Take it to Writing:Dear Boss, I have made a ground-breaking discovery, and it so amazing, you may wanna sit down. I found a whole 50 page journal from the Mesopotamians! This journal is oozing with facts from ancient Mesopotamia and how one Sumerian's life was like. The journal describes how life was hard in Mesopotamia, and how cuneiform and the wheel benefited them. This person is a farmer, and they talk about how the kings were unfair woth the social system. Thanks, Ayanna.(P.S. Can I get that promotion now?) 1.How do think cuneiform helped make the government more fair?2. Do you think people in different social classes thought differently of the king?

Dear Boss,

I discovered the most amazing thing ever today! I found a journal that went all the way back to the Mesopotamia time period when they could write. Just imagine what we could learn from this. We could discover new words in cuneiform. We can see how they made sentences, and what they did to make a journal. This also could be the first and when they started making journals. They could write in it like a diary and we could write a book about it or something. This so cool, I can’t believe I found this. I think I should get a raise or something like that. I am going to take it back to lab and do some tests on it to see exactly where and when it is from.

Sincerely,

Sydney/Clara
