Documented progressive discipline of a problem employee is essential if that discipline leads to termination. You will need to have a very specific set of guidelines for termination set forth in the employee handbook, and then follow those guidelines exactly.

Steps:

Talk to the employee about their performance and make sure you have a similar understanding of their requirements. If there are any external issues causing the poor performance, identify and resolve these issues when possible.

Verbally reprimand the employee.

Place a written verbal warning in the employee's file.

Suspend the employee, starting with one day and increasing the number of days if performance does not improve.

If nothing else works, terminate the employee.

Make sure you have a legal reason for firing an employee. You can't just fire someone because you dislike them.
Firing an employee can easily become a discrimination case if the employee feels like they have been discriminated against.
When it comes down to the firing process, have all documentation ready and prepare yourself to deal with an employee who will be visibly upset.
Do not try and soften the blow with small talk, be forward with the employee and tell them they have been terminated and when their last day will be. Anything you say can be used against you so keep it professional and strictly business.
Once you have terminated the employee make sure to get back any keys, badges, or uniforms that belong to the company.
