Building codes set standards for buildings to ensure more safety for the residents living there. Building codes required New buildings to have fire escapes and decent plumbing. Cities also hired people to collect garbage off the streets, and sweep the streets. Another solution that helped poverty was Settlement Houses. They opened up a settlement house called Hull House. Even though poverty rates have dropped since the 1800's there are still people living in poverty especially in big cities like New York.
