The rich colors that can be built with them fascinate me. My work is often centered around color, particularly softer palettes full of browns and faded hues. This unassertive palette, ironically, is a product of my tendency to go overboard with color. When working with paint and colored pencils, I often combine as many shades as possible.  I love the way those conflicting pigments mesh together, much like the facets of my own identity, to create something softer, something more complex.

They're still a bit of a mystery to me, those little movements that live in my right hand. They rest through much of the day but lead bustling lives in the evenings, when the essays have been written and the calculus problems are solved-- when I take up my brushes and pastels and begin a different kind of work.  I don't know when they first moved in, but I’m certain they’ve constructed permanent homes there, in the calluses on my ring finger and the base of my thumb.
