In recent history, Yemen has faced extremely violent civil wars. The reunification process is often viewed as a failure due to this.

Yemen's geography is very diverse. It features 4 distinct regions. the coastal plains in the west, the western highlands, the eastern highlands, and the Rub' al Khali(translates to the empty quarter) in the east. These two Platue regions hold most of the farming which is done terrace style. Although these highlands have high levels of precipitation none of the rainfall there reaches oceans as it evaporates off passing through the deserts.
