So far we've gone over the 0, 1, 2, 4, 5, & 10 facts. We recommend practicing these daily at home. Students can practice in a variety of ways.

Here are some ideas:

the OMS Multicultural Night on Thursday, November 6th.

We have been learning songs from Italy, Uruguay, Jamaica and Ghana.

More information about the performance, including the time, will follow.

The third-grade students will be performing at the OMS Multicultural Night on Thursday, November 6th. Each performance will last no longer than 15 minutes.

The performance times are as follows:

At 6:10 pm, Students in Mrs. Molnar, Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Bagg's classes.

At 6:30 pm, Students in Mrs. Helmann and Mrs. Yarbrough's classes.

Students should wear comfortable, school appropriate clothing. Gym shoes are preferred. However, if students have clothing that reflects other cultures or traditions, they may wear that, also.

Reading: Identifying elements of poetry and figurative language

Writing: Creating goals and writing letters to our future selves

Science: Weather is how the sky looks and the air feels. We are learning how we can look at weather patterns to predict upcoming weather and the tools we use to measure weather. Identifying severe weather.

SEL: Reviewing why EMOTIONS matter, learning our "feeling" words, and creating a Class Charter.

Grammar: Common and proper nouns

"The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a standardized test designed to measure learned reasoning and problem­ solving skills. These abilities, acquired both in and out of school, are important because children use them on a daily basis to learn and solve problems. It is important to note that the CogAT is neither an intelligence test nor an achievement test. It measures developed rather than innate abilities."

As the weather gets colder and it begins to snow, we ask that students bring snow bags labeled with their names to school when there is snow on the ground.

Students will use their bags to transport their items to and from specials. This will hopefully prevent lost winter gear! Please make sure you label all items!

Reading: We began Module 4 this week and are exploring a variety of texts and media that provide information about the features of drama. We will be focusing on the value of drama and the key differences between stories and plays. We also learned

Writing: We are currently writing a fictional story, focusing on creating characters, a setting, and a plot.

Social Studies: We studied different tourist attractions around the United States.

Grammar: Subject and Object pronouns

Our third graders recently completed a research project in the library media center classes related to the study of weather in their classrooms. They worked in teams to research information about types of severe weather or natural disasters such as blizzards, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, and tsunamis. Each team member was responsible for answering a research question. Then, the teams produced a news show. They were filmed in videos playing roles such as anchor person, weather person, and reporter or guest on the scene. Some even included props and costume pieces to make their news shows look more realistic. The third graders were excited to host the second grade classes to view their videos.

Illinois Public Act 097-­1147, requires public schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention education for children in pre­kindergarten through twelfth grades. Age­-appropriate instruction helps students recognize unsafe situations, keep themselves safe, and understand how to respond to unsafe situations. School social workers work with each grade level to provide age-­appropriate information on topics such as safe versus unsafe touching, the touching rule, secrets, and reporting.

We're partnering with Box Out Bullying for an inspiring age-appropriate, theatrical, interactive event. They will use interactive live theater, multimedia visuals, colorful characters, audience participation, and evidence-based bullying prevention techniques to capture attention and empower students. The program also aligns with AHSD25’s RULER curriculum.

Reading: We finished up Module 5 this week. We read realistic fiction texts that focused on teamwork. We identified literary elements, author's craft, and theme in order to better understand the topic. In Module 6, we will read nonfiction texts about animal survival. We will focus on author's purpose, central idea, and text structure.

Writing: In Module 5, students wrote a persuasive letter to encourage a new student to be their friend. As a class, we went through the writing process of planning and brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing a final copy.

Science: We are currently in our forces and motion unit. We have learned that a force is a push or a pull. We know about gravity and friction. Next, we will learn which objects are magnetic, that magnetic fields can work through certain objects such as water, and that magnets have a north and south pole.

Grammar: Past, present, and future tense verbs.

3rd graders will take the IAR tests right away in the morning on:

ELA - March 2nd, 3rd, and 6th

Math - March 10th, 11th, and 13th

1. Discuss the importance of these tests with your child, emphasizing the value of their effort and the opportunity to show what they have learned.

2. Remind them that the test is a snapshot in time of their learning and to focus on doing their best.

3. Encourage them to take their time and not rush through the test, as the allotted session time is sufficient.

4. Stress the importance of a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast on testing days.

5. Reinforce a positive mindset towards testing and remind them that their value is not defined by test scores.

Please remind your child to keep their smart watches in "school mode" while they are at school. Cell phones should also be off and in their backpacks during the school day. If necessary, staff members will ask students to keep these devices in their backpacks.

Writing: In Module 7, students will write an opinion essay. The topic is: What ideas do you have for making our school better? They will learn that an opinion essay states an opinion or belief about a topic. It includes reasons and facts to support that opinion.

Social Studies: We started a unit on government last week. We will learn the main responsibilities of our local government and the three main levels of government in the United States.

We will review in class on Monday and Tuesday. Please look for this to come home with your child.

Reading: We are currently in Module 8, focusing on nonfiction texts about inventors and inventions. As we read, we are working on identifying the author’s purpose and the central idea to help us better understand new and unfamiliar texts.

Writing: This week, we researched interesting facts about an invention we use in everyday life. We are now beginning to turn those facts into a research report.

Around July 10, access will be removed so preparations can be made for next year. However, some sites can still be accessed even without Clever, like Typing.com, using your child's Google username and password.
