Okonkwo is a well respected, fierce, wealthy man. He had won fame as the greatest wrestler in the nine villages. His 2 farms are filled with yams while his home is filled with 3 wives and a 8 kids. Despite all these achievements, Okonkwo feared being unsuccessful. He had immense hate for those like his father. At an early age Okonkwo was considered young, but was already one of the greatest men due to the fact that he had already taken 2 titles and shown incredible prowess in both 2 inter-tribal wars. What Okonkwo doesn't have however is the lack of compassion and kindness. Because of the fear of being unsuccessful, Okonkwo beats his eldest son for being lazy in hopes of his son being more active. His age was respected, however his achievements were revered. As a result, he was assigned to look after Ikemefuna.

Okonkwo didn't really know that this word had another meaning that not a woman's name. After he had learned that agbala meant a man who had taken no title. He had decided to not be like his father who was a "failure."

To include, women are also seen as beings that are just there to marry and to follow instructions on what the men tell them to. When okonkwo called his eldest wife ndichie, she did was she was commanded to do and stayed quiet as well. This shows the stereotype that men are superior to woman.
