The people often feel misunderstood and everything seems better than being alone and therefore they choose to accept a bad group dynamic. He wants to show us that racism and nationalism often come from a place of jealousy, prejudice and low self-esteem. These factors get more radicalized through in a group situation (mostly by the leader of the group).

In the film “This is England”, the director wants us to understand that nationalism isn’t always a good thing. It can lead to violence against minorities, and that very quickly can cause people without specific life purposes to join strict radical groups such as neonazists. It gives the leader of the radical group a way to justify it and even make it necessary.
