Professional -- What does this make you think of? Images? Metaphors? How would you explain to someone who has never heard of this idea?

Makena Bondy: To explain this to someone who has never heard of this idea before, I would explain that professionalism is conducting oneself in a manner that is appropriate for the circumstances one is in. Being a professional in the workspace makes me think being a master of your work. Being competent in the proper areas and being the master or conductor of what you do- leading the way for future success.

In my opinion, professionalism is built on positive working relationships with those a teacher teaches, their peers, and administration. I would explain being professional as being able to work constructively to provide the best options to students while acknowledging the points of others and allowing for growth within your own ideas. I think being professional entails being organized, knowledgeable, open to learning, and collaboration.

I believe that professionalism encompasses a wide range of things such as, displaying strong teamwork, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. When we act in an appropriate manner and piece together these attitudes, we can display a positive image of the kind of person we aspire to be. I would explain professionalism as leading with good intentions and an open heart and mind, as we cooperate and collaborate with others.

When I think of professionalism, I immediately think of someone who is respectful to their workplace and the people they work with. Being respectful to their workplace encompasses many things. Most importantly to me it means being punctual and mindful of your actions when at work. Being respectful to the people you work with entails understanding and acknowledging that everyone you work with plays a special role that is equally important as your own. It is about building positive relationships with each coworker in order to facilitate a work environment that is enjoyable as well as professional.

In the work environment, someone who is professional is respectful, considerate, and reliable. Teaching professionalism to me is about being open minded to others opinions and ways of learning, respecting students, being mindful and aware of personal conduct with colleagues and students. If I were to explain professionalism to someone who had never heard of it, I would describe it as the being the best version of oneself, which includes compassion, respect, flexibility, and consideration for others and the way we impact those around us.

Professional, to me, involves being a dependable and mature individual in a specific field. When I look at the teaching career, being a professional means that your role as a teacher does not end when you leave the classroom. Teachers are role models in the community, and being professional means being respectful, having awareness of their actions, and self-reflecting on their interactions. I also see professionals as individuals who are able to identify and solve problems within the school community in a positive and insightful way. A professional may not always agree with the ideas of their colleagues and students, but are open-minded and willing to listen and work with them.

I believe that professionalism mainly incorporates being respectful and mature in terms of how you interact with others and how you approach your job. One example of professionalism in interactions would be talking about others (colleagues, parents, students) in a way that is truthful but that also upholds their dignity. Some examples of professionalism in job performance would be completing tasks on time, putting effort into the tasks, etc. Behaving professionally helps to ensure that you are not only doing your job effectively, but that you are creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

I hold the opinion that professionalism encompasses a wide variety of appropriate attributes, skills, and actions of individuals in a certain environment. As a teacher, being a professional means that you conduct yourself in a way that is expected in the profession. For example, a teacher may be professional by dressing appropriately. In addition, a teacher may be professional by completing tasks on time, using respectful language with students and parents, being organized and more. Being professional should be a constant in the mind of a teacher as having this attitude will help us succeed and grow.

In my perspective, professionalism is the ability to remain timely, organised, respectful, and considerate in the workplace. This is essential within the teaching profession as teachers as we are consistently working as a team and functioning as a role model for students. It is essential to remain professional and with a positive attitude and open heart at all times. Without professional, classrooms may be missing the welcoming and safe environment that they need for teachers and students.
