Shakespeare, a player as well as a dramatist, belonged to a company of players. His company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men (from 1603 the King’s Men) competed with others, notably the Admiral’s Men, for audiences. Like most leading players, Shakespeare was a sharer in his company and was able to enjoy its profits. He also had to suffer its losses - for example, when the first Globe burnt down in 1613. His plays were created with his company’s players in mind. Such players as the tragedian Richard Burbage and clowns like William Kemp influenced the roles within Shakespeare’s plays.

Shakespeare’s theatre came to an end in 1642. In that year, on the eve of the Civil War, all the playhouses were closed by order of Parliament. Those which were still structurally sound were either converted into dwellings, or demolished so that their timbers could be reused elsewhere. The players could no longer perform their plays in public.

How does being involved in theater develop leadership skills!

Being involved in theater can help you develop leadership skills.

HOW: When you participate in theater you watch the director guide people how to act out the play. This gives you the confidence to be able to help correct someone if they did need help. Maybe they forgot their lines or they don’t know where to stand. There are many ways that participants in theater, even if they have a small part, can work together to bring every member of the play together to perform the main goal. This act, builds leadership in yourself to know that you don’t have to be the director, or have a big part in order to be a leader and help. 

You can use this skill, in your daily life. You don’t have to be an adult to help, or the teacher to help, or the parent to help because there are no small parts, only small actors.

Being involved in theater can help with motivation & commitment.

How: Most kids don’t like tests. Theater can help with motivation in the classroom by changing the way children share their knowledge of a subject. For example, in fourth grade, we studied explorers. We were asked to choose an explorer and learn about their lives and what they explored. We were asked to come to school dressed up like the explorer we chose and to answer questions from the parents as if we were the explorers. It was a very fun project and I still remember all about my explorer today.

This exercise taught me about commitment because it was a fun way to learn about a female explorer. I became committed to learning everything I could in case a parent asked me a question, I wanted to be able to answer every possible question someone would ask me. 

Also, Theater can help with commitment because if you have a part in a play and just quit, the production will not be able to continue so it teaches children to not quit because they will just ruin it for everyone.

Even though you need to work as a team in theatre you also need to learn the skill of being independent. You may need to work independently to help with costumes, stage decorations and props for the show. Most importantly, you need to be independent to learn your script on your own!


Même si on travaille très souvent en équipe  dans une troupe de théâtre, les acteurs apprennent aussi a être plus indépendant. Par exemple, le directeur peut partager les tâches pour les costumes, les décorations de la scène et les accessoires pour le spectacle. Plus important encore, il faut être assez indépendant pour mémoriser les lignes tout seul!

Role play in theatre needs you to control yourself and your feelings. You need to have the discipline to stay focused on your part and be present. In theatre you need to memorize many lines and you need to be committed to do so.  For younger children, this self-discipline may be more difficult because it takes away from their playtime.  

Au théâtre, l'autodiscipline est très importante parce qu’on travaille en équipe. Les gens comptent les uns sur les autres et chacun doit avoir la discipline de respecter les temps. Lorsqu'une personne ne montre pas son engagement envers son travail, elle fera reculer toute l’equipe.

Le jeu de rôle dans le théâtre a besoin d’une maitrise de soi et des emotions. Il faut developer une discipline pour rester concentré sur le rôle et être présent. La memorisation de lignes demande une grande discipline. Pour les jeunes enfants, cette engagement peut être plus difficile car elle les éloigne de leur temps de jeu.

 

 

Actors learn special tricks to memorise lines faster. For example, recording themselves, rehearsing with a friend, walking up and down, learning early morning and before going to sleep. 

Les étudiants au théâtre développent des compétences nécessaires pour apprendre plus rapidement. Ils ont de nombreuses lignes à apprendre et des délais assez courts. Ils doivent trouver un moyen de mémoriser rapidement avant les prochaines répétitions.
