• Kula volcanics: Made of jagged ʻaʻā lava flows, these are dense and heavily weathered, forming valleys and supporting percehd high-level. groundwater in places like Ha'ikū

• Hana volcanic: Comprised of smoother pāhoehoe and thin ʻaʻā flows, these are more permeable, yielding fresh water but often becoming brackish on the leeward side

Most of the are has a high permeability, especially in some Hana flows, allowing rainwater to easily penetrate, although some groundwater becomes brackish or mixes with older flows.

The coastal reigons include sediments and grabels that support limited groundwater discharge. A younger, highly permeable basalt area exists with natural springs.
