I have been drawn to the ocean for my entire life. I have been drawn to the ocean for life.

When my toes touch the sand I am a child. As I gaze seaward from the beach I want to swim as far as I can see. When I scuba dive I feel I have arrived at my true home. The first time I saw a shark it stirred something deep inside. I am so upset with the wholesale slaughter of these wonderful, beautiful, important creatures and must find my way of helping to save them.

How can I be a good steward? What can I do to help ensure my children and their children's children are able to experience their true home?

I live in Pondicherry ,India. A coastal region. From childhood i use to take the beach road to my school because i like the sea breeze. Even the road i use to take to my college has sea view which is extremely mesmerizing to watch. through out all four seasons of the year the ocean give different experience to me. Whenever the cyclone hits our coast there will be a heavy rain fall and high tides and wind but the very next day the ocean appear so clam and beautiful. I feel like oceans alive and always trying to say something about life .

I have never lived near the ocean , but I've been drawn to it my whole life and I'm planning to move to the coast in the next year or two. The ocean is paradoxical in many ways - although it's calming, it never stops moving. Although it's beautiful, it's a hostile habitat for most of its inhabitants, every day being a fight for survival against predators and human plunder. It's powerful and pitiless, but essential to the survival of the planet.

It seems for many of us the ocean simply becomes home. Somehow, despite being immensely vast, unknown, and so deep that makes us being aware of how alive we are, the ocean with all its history, its mythology, its beautiful and whimsical blue and green shades, the tides, the unknown creatures that become eerie as sunlight make them unrecognizable to our perception, despite that feeling of being defenceless by all what we ignore about it, the ocean seems the key to know more about our origin, existence, and so on. Paradoxically, to me, ocean was where to be when I needed more oxygen to breath and make conflict lighter. But also, that line between what I know and what I cannot know/see. That balance between being brave and dare to swim to a remote Greek myth, or to stay in the shore bored wanting to swim and discover what there is beyond the deep.

A Foundation to life

I find the ocean captivating. I have been lucky enough to grow up relatively close to the sea and surfing is a huge part of my life. The ocean provides me with a variety of feelings and provokes many thoughts. not only is it a playground and a place of rest but the ocean is also the 'beating heart' of the planet. There is a delicate equilibrium which humans consistently test and push. if the equilibrium fails, the oceans will die which will result in the death of all life. For this reason i believe that studying the ocean is the key to combating climate change. Furthermore, the ocean holds so many unknowns! i would love to research the lifeforms under the sea and explore the 'alien' worlds of the deep.

To me the ocean is vast, magnificent and inspires in me a sense of calm and belonging. At the same time it can be a destructive force and must be respected. There are a lot of things we still don't know about the ocean and that mystery is exciting and thrilling. I find that even though vast areas of it are essentially desserts, there are a lot of fascinating biodiversity and unique ecosystems. Marine biology is truly my vocation.

For me the ocean is a home. Home which I will never get to know fully. It brings all diverse feelings, same as our oceans are their self. It calms me down to look at it and smell the air and it exiting me with the big dangerous waves when on board or strong currents during diving. I smile and want to protect a little creatures swimming by and I adore the sharks or whales with big respect. I am guessing,…. what they think of me? …or us humans? I live on the sea. I love the sea. I've always been fascinated by our vast oceans and felt as if it was calling to me. I feel calm and at peace when I'm in the water and the more I learn about our magical underwater ecosystems the more I understand how important it is to protect and preserve it. Sharks very quickly became my favourite animals and I am always in awe of these beautiful creatures and the way they have evolved. This photo was taken by a good friend of mine while on a volunteer trip to South Africa on a shark tour and research boat. Since this trip I have become even more passionate about sharks and our oceans and want to learn all I can about conservation and how to protect our oceans.

Since I was little, I have always felt connected to the ocean. It is a place where I feel I can truly be myself with out the feeling of being rushed to conform to expectations that are put onto me. The ocean provides so much for the world with a sense of "Agape", a feeling of unconditional love. As the world has started to move on without the ocean, into a more technological era, it feels as though this sense of appreciation for the ocean is fading as well. In this image, although not a popular sea creature, the siphonophore, to me, represents the way humans are naturally interconnected with the ocean and why we must continue to learn about it and protect the beautiful ever-evolving life within it.

My fascination towards ocean did not start from my childhood like it did for most of them. Also, I am not a person who happens to live near a shore or anything . My interest towards marine biology started just when I was 14. When I look at the calming ocean waves it makes me ponder how is it that the wave rushing towards the shore goes back smoothly without causing any damage to the shore. The so called Blue Planet is mostly made up of water so how much time would it take for the ocean to sweep through the land with water and why is everything always in control. This made me realize the wonderful hints that God has left us with to understand him. The Ocean indeed is a precious gift from him and we must take care of it in the best way we can to conserve it. More than that there is something that makes me want to learn it. The species found in the depths of the Ocean are way beyond of what we could imagine. We certainly don't understand how much the ocean is connected to our daily lives but we have to. That's the reason I took the course in the first place and I am hoping to learn more from it.

The ocean gives me a multitude of feelings, from excitement to fear. I have always felt in awe in front of it as it offers this other world of which we have only explored and been able to research 5-10% of. The ocean is something we should cherish as it provides over 50% of our world's oxygen, regulates our climate and weather patters as well as being the habitat for over 700,000 marine species. Realise it or not, it plays a large part in all our lives and I hope in the future we are able to discover more of it and ways to use its resources without hurting the marine life it boasts.

The mysteriousness of the ocean is what makes it so fascinating. So much of it is undiscovered as it covers the largest area over anything else in the entire world. It possesses so much power and beauty that humans couldn't begin to even imagine, and it controls every aspect of our existence. We are entirely dependent on the ocean, from the regulation of our world's climate to the medicinal opportunities it gives us. This is what fuels my passion and intrigue for it, and why it enchants me. I believe in the importance of protecting and conserving our ocean as it provides us with so much that is essential to us. The current state that our ocean is in is devastating and if we continue to damage it, humanity may never be the same again. We must learn to live in a state of harmony with our ocean to ensure the future for it and us remains bright.

I've always loved the ocean. The moment when you go on holiday and get to go in the beautiful, clear blue water and see all the fish swimming around your feet. However, there's also so much which is undiscovered and it's incredible to imagine how many species we're unaware of and what may still be out there. i have always found the ocean so much prettier and lively than the land. with the range of colours from scarlet reds to neon yellow and pink. the coral reefs have always been my favourite as it is like the underwater city with fish travelling to and from and the protection from larger predators.
