All of my students have some type of a disability. Some of my students have worked with me for the last two years, while others have never worked with me before this school year.
Some of my students will have already been exposed to my lessons and they will be attempting my lessons for a second or third time, while others will be exposed to my lessons for the first time. Since all of my students have disabilities, they may not be as successful the first, second, or third time around with my lessons.
Some of my students love getting to work with me no matter what the content is that they are working on while others loathe working with me because I make them do work. I have a few students who love coming to see me and I have one student who puts his head down and says, "no, no, no, no" every time he sees me.

Learner Characteristic #1

I am going to focus on my students' mobility for my lesson. I have a wide range of mobility levels within my classes. I have some students who are fully mobile and can run around my gym without any problems. I have some students who have braces (AFOs) on their legs and struggle to move around my gym. I also have students who are in wheelchairs or use walkers or gait trainers to move around my gym.
Mobility for this lesson is important because many of my students will need hand-over-hand assistance for the dances. I will also have to modify some of the dance moves and show my students how they can perform the moves at a slower pace.

The other characteristic that I will have to take into account is the cognitive level of my students. As previously stated, I work with students with a variety of disabilities. This includes a wide range of cognitive ability levels.
Cognitive ability levels will be important to focus on during these lessons because some of the dances/dance steps may be too complicated for many of my students to follow. I will have to slow down some of the dances/dance steps for my students to be able to follow along. Another option would be for me to allow my students to move as best they can with the music, as long as they are moving and trying, they will receive credit.

The song "Cupid Shuffle". I can modify this song for my students so that they are able to perform an adapted version of the dance. This is an easy dance because it only has four steps so my students with lower cognitive levels will be able to learn four basic steps and repeat them to the beat of the song.

The second resource I will use for my students of varying cognitive ability levels is MeMoves. This is a DVD that I have for my students to use as a cool down but it also helps teach them to move to a slow beat. The videos have children and adults moving their arms slowly to a beat with calming music in the background. The people in the video are using bilateral coordination, cross-lateral coordination, and spatial awareness when they move their arms to the music.
https://thinkingmoves.com/

My third resource will be a website called GoNoodle. This website has a variety of videos that incorporate dance and rhythmic movements. I will be able to use this website with my students who are mobile as well as with my students who need hand-over-hand assistance because they are not mobile. I am able to select exactly which videos I want to use with my students so I am able to differentiate my teaching by choosing varying difficulty levels of videos. I am also able to watch the videos before I show my students so that I can pre-teach the skills that they will need to know for the videos.
https://www.gonoodle.com/

My fourth resource will be the video game Just Dance Kids. Many of the songs and dances can be found online through YouTube but my district also has copies of the video games for schools to rent. Below is an example of one of the dances that I could do with my students because there are more arm movements than leg movements, so my students in gait trainers or wheelchairs could focus on the body and arm movements. They would still be able to perform most of the dance moves without having to worry about moving their legs.
