Homework can be an excellent extension of the learning that occurs in the classroom. However, due to varying family dynamics, it is important to recognize that some students do not have support at home. These students may not have the tools necessary to complete the assignments OR access to someone who can help them. Therefore, it is vital for teachers to dig into the reasons why students are not completing homework assignments and to brainstorm ways to help them achieve success in this area.

Homework is a tricky subject... I like to use it to review prior taught concepts that students should have mastery of. It should not be used for concepts currently being taught in class. Many students do not have parentcsuppprt at home. I prefer to give homework on Monday and make it due on Friday so students have time to complete the homework while having a life outside of school ( sports, church, etc) and they also haven time to getcwitje if they need help completing the assignment. Homework should not take more than 30 min a week for a single subject.

Homework has become synonymous with the obsolete practices of worksheets or exclusive direct instruction to rows of students. Homework can be ineffective when it becomes a punitive source of shame towards students whose home lives are not ideal, and students lack the support to complete the work. While I would not send home material that I haven’t taught, creating a literacy rich environment that is reinforced at home will yield its own fruit. My hope would be that students would catch the fire for the love of reading, and its blaze couldn’t be contained within school hours.

I use homework so that the student can practice the objectives learned, and so the parents can see what was taught that day. I don't think homework should take a long time because students need to have time to be with family and time to just be a kid. If homework is not done the night it is assigned I give an extra day (unless it becomes a habit) because I know things come up. I don't assign homework on Wednesday because that is church night for some students. I also don't assign homework over the weekend because I think students need that time as a break from school. As a parent I love when my child has homework assigned on Monday and it is not due until Thursday or Friday. That gives us flexibility so if we are busy one night it is not a problem the next day or my child can do a little each day.

If homework is assigned students should have the time to complete the assignment in the time you have them. If not completed, they can do it for homework. Homework may also be given for parent involvement and awareness of what’s being taught to the student at school. Students spend enough time at school to have to go home and do more school, especially at a young age.

I don't give homework often. Number one because I don't like to grade it. Number two many kids just don't do it and it upsets me (sadly) when they don't turn it in. BUT, when I do assign homework, or have in the past, I reward the students that turned it in by playing Homeworkopoly (a game board set up with each student as a pawn and they get to roll the dice each day/time they bring in the assigned work. They have the opportunity to land on spaces with prizes or just nothing. The students enjoy getting to roll the dice and play as a reward.) The students that don't turn in the work has to complete it at recess and then go play once finished.
