I love the real-world applications of this project! I especially loved the mentor text element in which students read manuals and instruction booklets from products. I bet you can guarantee they've never paid attention to those types of real world writing all around them. I think students would have so much fun with this project - so much room for creativity, collaboration, and a real audience at the end. Pure gold. Totally stealing!

There's choice, collaboration, real-world application, and creativity all embedded in this task.
Bringing in a wide-variety of product and work related materials also gives students exposure to a variety of genres and reading opportunities.
More time in our groups would have been helpful.
ROB...On the NTN way of PBL and writing

Where were you when I was in the depths of despair in an all-NT district? (Yes - I cut my teeth in Napa, home of the original New Tech.) I tried for years to get people to take me seriously when I said that the writing-instruction part of those projects needed serious beefing-up. That they never took my advice is one of the top reasons I'm in Davis now. You should do this workshop for my old district. So many "PBL" teachers I know just assign stuff with zero supports and are then dumbfounded when they get crummy products. Well, DUH. Do what Rob does! Well done.

Rob, I really appreciate just how many standards, skills, and genres this PBL hits. It justifies the 3-5 week teaching time on that alone, plus the student buy-in and creativity aspects. I also really like how PBL puts students at the center and pivots teachers to a support role. Thank you!
--Daina

Thanks for the presentation Rob. I went to a PBL based high school and this really brought back memories. It's interesting how much content kids will teach themselves when they are given support and a choice. So many of my former PBL peers are on to awesome careers, and they never had a textbook, etc. Glad you can capture that in this unit. Also, a very portable unit. This can be done across subjects and in multiple classes. Really fun!

My genre mantra: purpose, audience, context and content will lead to appropriate forms, is brought to life through your presentation. Students have to THINK, but are motivated to do so. In a longer presentation, I could see each part of the unit represented by its own slide with pictures of students and/or their work. GREAT job, Rob!
-Bob

I can see how students would love this project. I love the way you use sample "master texts": in this situation, students have a real reason to closely analyze genres, but more importantly, they understand the FUNCTION of those genres in the real world. This kind of genre analysis that will transfer to writing other genres in other contexts.
-Lisa
