I think that Piaget is correct because he believed that a child could think before he could speak. I agree that the development of thought precedes speech. While I do agree that culture influences a child’s development, I think that Piaget had more valid points in regards to development overall. I have a 7 year old sister and, as she was growing up, I personally witnessed her develop the four stages of development that Piaget describes. Additionally, I agree with Piaget’s thought that children act on their own environment for learning.

Piaget argued that children will be able to learn when they are ready while Vygotsky argued that learning could be enhanced to a certain limit within the zone of proximal development and having the correct scaffolding. I agree with Piaget because development begins within the person and then it continues to the social world. 

Piaget held that cognitive development was similar across the globe while Vygotsky argued that cognitive development varied depending on time and cultures. I do agree with Piaget’s argument whereby that development is similar in every child because the rate of cognitive development is determined by the maturation level of the child. 

Piaget argued that cognitive development led to language while Vygotsky argued that language was significant to cognitive development. I do concur with Piaget’s argument because generally what we think is what we will speak out hence thought directs the language.
