"Thats my sweat you taste hor. My blood." 1.16.10

This shows the time and effort the mother put into developing the house into a protective and engaging environment for her family, and so shows why she is so frustrated with Boon's suggestions for her to let go of the house. This connects to the discourse presented between the culture of the older appreciative generation and younger materialistic and unsatisfied generation.

"I mean, wouldn't you like to have an amazing view of the sea?"
p.12 Scene 2
boon represents the younger generations. They have strong desire in pursuing new things and are very materialistic. They don't much care about the old things like history or heritage like the older generations. They also do not care about how others think as in the quote, he is assuming that no one will dislike living in a "pleasant" environment with amazing view of the sea. He made the decision for his mother in his head.

"I'm serving out my bond..." (Act 1, Scene 12)

This quote portrays the strong sense of emphasis of education and higher learning in Singapore culture. In Singapore, citizens can gain scholarships from the government to study overseas but will have to work in Singapore for a couple of years after their period of study. Through implementing this term in the play, Jean Tay presents how the Singapore culture prioritises education to the point where they are willing to send citizens overseas, compromising Singapore's economic activity in the short term.

"I don't know how you can live in this dump. If I could, I'd run far away." (Act 1, Scene 2, Page 14)

This line highlights not only the strong contrast between the beliefs of Boon and his mother but also their personal values. Boon clearly has little to no connection to the place he grew up in, and directly refers to it as a 'dump' that he would run away from as soon as he had the chance to do so. This emphasises Boon's emotional distance from his past (possibly due to trauma or the will to forget) as he wants to escape one of the few places that still reminds him of his childhood.

As in the act, he can't remember his name, doesn't understand what's happening around him and don't want to adapt to the new environment or changes. They are lost but no one is helping them as the laws and regulations are fixed and people are not willing to help them (like what Jeremiah's boss said)

This is reemphasized every time he meets with the agents. The first time he argues with his mom about moving out, although he is evidently frustrated, the interaction between them is still calm despite the tension. However, after talking to the agents several times and noticing how condescending they are towards him still living with his mom in a 'run down' apartment, his suggestions to his mom evolve into hostile demands, and he progressively gets angrier and less patient.

Boon thinks to himself "He might as well still be here" during his dream in scene 5 of act 1, which in context is taken as a negative thing. This could show the contrast in the ways that Boon and his mother view his father. While the mother misses him and tries to hold on to all memories of her deceased husband, Boon clearly wants to forget him. This creates the idea of home being a place where you feel safe and comfortable. This is reiterated by the fact that Boon strongly dislikes where him and his mother live, possibly due to the harsh memories he has of his father in that house, but his mother feels a deep connection to the house and considers it her home because of all the memories she was able to create in that house with her husband.
- Ria

This could relate to his regrets from when he was alive, and how he has still not forgiven himself or others.

"I should be back in my ivory tower right now, on the 25th floor, overlooking the CBD". Act 1 scene 18 page 49.

Through this dialogue, Jermimiah's materialistic ideologies are revealed as even during a frantic situation like talking to a dead yet alive corpse, he thinks about his nice apartment instead of dealing with the situation at hand. However, this can be contradicted as although his job is to exhumate the corpses he seems to genuinely care about this dead/alive corpse and helps it find its identity.

Perhaps Jerimiahs character and dialogue through this scene foreshadow/connects to Boon's character and how despite his materialistic values in life, he is also somewhat sentimental and has a "soft side" and truly does care about his mother and his values. (I don't know how this play ends but I'm guessing because Boon is the protagonist, he makes the right decision which is to put his mother in front of his money-driven values.)

-- Lexie
