The California gold rush was the discovery of gold beginning at Sutter's Mill, thousands of gold seekers came along the journey hoping to reach California from the East. There was three routes to go, all were very critical but it was a sacrifice people were willing to make. The gold rush had it's majority impact on immigrants, Californios, American gold miners, and California Native Americans. Life in the mining camps was dangerous, people were faced with exhaustion, poor food, and disease that brought health issues. The discovery happened from January 24, 1848 – 1855, people came for the belief that they too could become rich from the gold. The rush brought many people to California, with their current population they applied for statehood in 1849. As a result, the port city of San Francisco
grew to become a center of banking, manufacturing, shipping, and trade also in 1850 California officially became it's own state.
