Monday/arrival:

Ok on Monday I thought I was going to blow up with excitement. When we arrived at Woodlands we were introduced to our instructors. Once we had done that we went to our dorms, in my dorm I had me, Megan, Kiera, Olivia, Jess and Lilly, also known as Briggans, Foxy, Kangood, Palms, Jessie Jay and pickle. When we were settled we went to our instructors and played a couple of team building games. The fist thing we did was, Balance Beam. You started out with 250 woodland pounds and basically you had to stand on the beam and then get into age order without falling off. If you fell off you lost 10 pounds! By the end of the objective we had only had 70 pounds left. My favourite thing to do was an objective where you had a ring of wood on a pole and hundreds of strings coming out from it. Then a ball would be placed on the pole and as everyone pulled on a string The wood would lift off the ground catching the ball and the objective of this obstacle was to carry the ball across to another pole 3 times. For this obstacle we got 50 pounds per person.

Tuesday:

On Tuesday we went caving. Now here is a tip for caving, wear lots and lots of layers but only a couple of socks because your feet are going to get wet and cold. From year 6 to year 6 in the cave push yourself to go through the caves smallest holes because it is really worth it. In the cave you are going to get very wet but always go the wet way if you have a choice.

Wednesday:

On Wednesday we went canoeing. This was supposed to be a “dry” activity but if you were in a group with Mr .Campbell he doesn’t know what dry means so don’t start splash wars with him. At the end of the canal we did a challenge where you have to lean back on the side of the canoe and you had to trust each other.

Thursday:

On Thursday we did high rope. This hands down was my favourite day because we had experts on each platform and they would help the people across to the next obstacle. I was on the end of the zip wire obstacle and when people came zipping towards me I had to catch them and give them a big hug.

Friday: On Friday we did our mountain walk and we climbed Hay Bluff.

On this day I was very upset because we were leaving but I kept strong.

Day One: We arrived at school lugging our suitcase to the hall and seeing the bus that was going to take us to wales. We were off we arrived at Woodlands standing tall and proud was the big house that I was going to be sharing with. We had a tour of the garden and then found out who we were in a dorm with. I was with Daisy, Natalia, Lula, Emily, Mya and Natalie. Our first activity was going for a night time walk that night it was so cold we turned all our torches off to insure that we could see all the villages.

Day Two: I woke up pretty early from the sound of the river and really loud snoring we were all woken up fully at 7:30 ready to get down in time for breakfast the breakfast was so yummy then we got into our activity groups. My group started on caving which I was really nervous for but unfortunately to get out the cave we had to go through a strong river but close to the end I fell in and I was soaking wet and I was really cold so for the rest of the day I was freezing.

Day Three: Today I was really excited because we were going canoeing. First of all I was with Mya and Owen in the canoe and we went a really long way and then stopped off for lunch. Then we swopped and I was with Mya and Hattie we managed to get stuck in brambles which wasn’t good we completed the task which made me feel proud. After that we drank Hot Mud actually hot chocolate and had flapjack it was delicious.

Day Four: This morning we went high roping at first we went on a training course and that was fun but then it was time to do the real thing. I was really scared I climbed up the ropy bit and got across a little more further but then I got jelly legs and me and Daisy were taken down to have some yummy cake. I learnt that you have to keep trying even when it gets tuff.

Day Five: It is the last day today so we got up extra early. We were going up a mountain and there was a high chance that we were going to be walking in the snow. Which we were because when we got up the mountain there was ice everywhere we saw several pony’s we had such a good lunch we had a very good day today and it was a great experience that I will take home with me .

My favourite part of residential is canoeing because it was a fun task and we had some good laughs along the way even though it got tough like when we got stuck in brambles or when we hit a big rock, capsized, lost an ore and crashed into other boats.

On the first day of residential, my group started off with outdoor business. First, we started with the Balance Beam where you have to get across the beam and end up in age order - we earned 230 Woodland pounds! The next activity was Strike A Note where you have to get every person to hit the Bell with support from others - we earned 500 Woodland pounds from that activity! We did lots more activities and all round we ended up with 1900 Woodland pounds!

The next day my group did my favourite activity-caving. The bus ride was very long but the amazing views made up for it. When we got to our destination I new that the cave was going to be large but have small gaps to enable you to get to the place you’re headed. After getting all of the equipment on my instructor decided to send us down to the cave! After my instructor described the cave we started our journey through the deep dark cave-it’s not that deep. At the end of my fabulous (wet) caving experience all the boys in the group had to get changed and so did the girls. On the bus ride home it started to snow, which is much more important than beautiful views that I’ve already seen, but it didn’t snow much, which wasn’t appealing.

This day was personally my favourite day because I faced my fears of being stuck in one or two of the tight spaces and because overall the day was very fun.=)

On the first day of residential we started off at the school like any other day, well not totally a normal day, we were in non-school uniform (only the year six’s). All of us were waiting to get out of the hall and onto the massive Pullhams bus outside. All of us (well, most of us) were bouncing around in excitement. When it was finally time to set off and head to woodlands we put our bags in the huge hold of the bus then set off. To make a loooooooooooong story short the bus ride was very long, tiring and I occasionally fell asleep, I was about to drift off again when we FINALLY reached woodlands. When we dizzily got off the bus one of the kind instructors there introduced himself to our school and showed us around the grounds, then he showed us our cosy dorms, everyone in our dorm needed a bit of help making their beds so I helped them and they got the hang of it.

For our activity that day we did team building to improve our teamwork skills, and it was SO fun. First off we did an activity where everyone stood on a wooden beam and had to get into height and age order, it was really fun! After that challenge we did one of my favourite challenges, basically it’s a four metre long sewage tunnel (don’t worry, it doesn’t actually carry sewage!) that you had to crawl through, most people thought it was quite scary although I thoroughly enjoyed it. Next up was strike a note, the way strike a note works is that there is a bell hanging from a tree a but two metres up and you and your team have to work together to try and hit the bell it actually worked out quite well, all of us managed to reach the bell so it was fairly easy. We did a few more challenges until it was time to go to bed. I can safely say now that the following days were as successful and as challenging as the first day

Residential Blog

Keira

Day 1

When we first arrived we were told what room we were in, I was in Sycamore with Rosie, Megan, Jess, Olivia and Lily P. Our room was in the annexe and it was the largest in the annexe. We started to unpack and get ready for are chat in the classroom to find out what activity group we were in. We ran down to see who we were with, I was with Chris, who was head of the centre, but I was also with Miss Gale. We did some team building activity’s which included a balance beam. On the beam you had to get into alphabetical order according to your first name without falling off it was fun and challenging because our strategy was to duck down and let the person next to you step over you.It started to get dark so we went in to have dinner which was pasta because the the oven had broken. It was delicious, once we had finished we went to get lots of layers on because we were doing a night walk in the woods. It was fun but tiring so I fell to sleep quite quickly.

Day 2

I woke up excited and nervous because I knew today was caving to Porth Yr Ogof. I got up and looked at the sheet, which was stuck on the wall, to see what to wear. I had to wear lots of layers and bring a spear change of clothes because we might get a bit wet, we hopped on the minibus and headed off. It took half an hour to get there but it was well worth it because the entrance of the cave looked AMAZING. We started to head inside the cave it got warmer the deeper we went into the cave, the first small space we went through was the Letter Box(which is the smallest space) Chris-our instructor-showed us how to crawl through then we went further in to the next section we saw stalactites and stalagmites. We also went into a mud chamber and a river.Once we had explored the cave we jumped back in the minibus and had our lunch with hot chocolate.

Day 1

After we arrived we were given our dorms and got told to go and unpack our bags. We had about 10 minutes to get ready. There are to dorm places at woodlands outdoor education centre the main building and the annexe I was put upstairs on the girl’s floor in a bedroom called sycamore where I had Rosie, Keira, myself, Jessica, Olivia and Lily P. Then not long after we were told our activity groups for the week. Then as it was about lunch time we went into the summer cabin to eat and Dan told us a bit about this week as we had only arrived that day we did on site activities called outdoor business where you did an activity to start by gaining woodlands coins and then buying activities I was quite good at it. When it started to get dark we went in to our dorms and waited for a teacher to tell us it was time for tea. The first night we had a vegetable pasta bake everyone was excited and tired at the same time we were told to get changed into lots of layers so we could go on a night walk in the woods it was fairly scary but Miss Gale pushed me on and stopped me from falling down the hill we had to walk down when we reached the hill. We got back at around 9:30 and all went straight to bed.

Day 2

Tuesday was the most exciting and nerve racking day I have ever experienced I my life so far. It was the day of caving woke up to hear Mrs McGuinness telling us to stick our hands out of bed. Lily fell out of bed I was still half asleep so I didn’t see it happen. In our dorm we had a sheet to tell us what we needed for every activity on each day. Soon we went down for breakfast and filled up on the food that was delicious we then got called into a classroom to discuss the first full day on residential. We had to drive to the cave but it was worth it as the cave was amazing. One of the weird things is that it was warmer in the cave than outside. Before we could go in and cave for a little while, we had to put safety equipment on. Dan –our instructor- taught us how to clip on our head torches and tie our safety belt. We explored and learnt a bit about stalactites and stalactites and why if you shine a head torch onto the ceiling of the cave you would see something that looks like crystals, when actually it is just water droplets that are reflecting the light of your torch. We explored one half without the small spaces. We ate lunch and got back to the cave as quickly as possible. This time we had to conquer the small spaces and go deeper into the cave than we had been that morning.

Day 1: I arrived at school to a Pulhams bus outside me so I lugged my suitcase inside the school hall. We did the normal register in the classroom until 10:45am when we got our suitcases under the bus and got on. I was sat next to Matt, on the way, me and Matt talked about weird politics and what would happen if we joined other continents. It was fun. At 12:30pm we arrived at woodlands we got sorted into our dorms and activity groups, I was in spruce (our dorm name) with Aaron.

Day 2: Caving, it was amazing we had got our caving suits on and we were ready to go so, we did. It was scary at first but once you had got in it wasn’t that scary. The tightest space was the letter box but, we all got through fine. That day caving was the first activity I had done underground.

Day 3: climbing day yes. Although I cried, it was alright I reached the top of the climbing wall and completed the high ropes course. We first went down to the room where we got our harnesses and helmets, then we got to go on the climbing wall after we learned how to belay. On the high ropes I did cry but the achievement of doing the high ropes course was amazing! Before we did go on the high ropes course we did the low ropes course which taught us how to balance and how to clip our karabiners onto the ropes.

Day 4: canoeing was by far my favourite activity we canoed across Brecon canal. At first, I was with Mya at the front; Orla in the middle; and me at the back steering. The best part was the scenery and the sound of nature. When we stopped for the second time I switched with Hattie and canoed with Joe.

Day 5: we summited Hay Bluff which, is 677m above sea level. It was fun and tiring but still fun. When we got back we got our suitcases packed and put them on the bus this time, I didn’t sit next to anyoneL. It was fun though I, Joe, Joseph and Ryan sang loads of songsJ. When we got back I was delighted to see my Mum.

Then at quarter to 10 when we got on the bus and I was feeling excited and abit nervous but when we got there at 12:30. When we got off the bus we got told who we were in a dorm with and I was with Owen and also I was in the annexe and I was downstairs. Also we were introduced to the staff and my leader was Dan. In my room was a toilet, shower, two mirrors and two sinks. But when we had a shower it smelt like butter and the first activity was group work. Also we did a night walk.

Day 2

I did caving and I got very wet also it was so much fun also you had to go through small gaps like the letterbox, worm hole, washing machine and the toilet. The cave was called Porth Yr Ogof and the cave had the biggest opening in wales and when we did caving Dan said don’t die. Because some kid who came before nearly drowned because he jumped into the deep water thinking it would be fun but when he jumped in he was laughing but his laughing turnt into shouting and his head went under water. Also we had to wear lots off layers and a caving suit which stiff.

Day 3

Today we did high ropes and it was scary but I did it and I did cry but Mr Cambell helped me and I was on one off the stations and I had to help people. At the end we did climbing wall it was fun I only got to the top once then I wanted to come back down. There was easy medium and hard I did them all except hard. Then we did zip wire we went up and we had to choose someone pull our rope and I choose Eve and it was fun to do it. It was so much fun and later that night I did orienteering and me, Owen and Scott. There is three different challenges you start on white then go to yellow and the hardest one is red but me, Owen and Scott only did white and did a little bit of yellow.

Day 4

So when we woke up we had to pack our stuff and leave out our toothbrushes and cloths warm cloths then we had to have breakfast then we had to meet in classroom then we had to get our stuff on then meet by the bus then we got on the bus where I was sat by the door and when we got there it was freezing and we had to do our walking boots in a certain way or we could break our legs and everyone did it right and we couldn’t see the mountain because it was foggy then me and Harrison were in charge off the maps off hay bluff. Then when we got half way then we had lunch then we got to the top off the mountain we went down the steep way and we all slid down it when we got to the bus we had flapjack.

A few seconds later we all stuffed our luggage in the couch and got on the couch. After 2.5 hours of the journey we finally arrived at the Woodlands outdoor education centre in Wales. I was feeling a bit sic when we got there because we were on the couch for more than 2 hours, but anyway I thought it was amazing! I was in a dorm room with Tilly, Ruby and Sophie. I wanted to be in a room with them anyway so I was lucky. We were introduced to Dan, who showed us around and told us which dorm we are going in and what group we were in. I was in group 3 and my instructor was Lisa. I really liked her. I was living in the Annexe with only 2 dorm rooms for the boys but the girls had more rooms because there was a lot of girls on residential and not many boys. After we made our beds we got into our groups and did some practice activities like crawling through a small tunnel and some other stuff.

Day 2:

On Tuesday we did canoeing and was so excited to do it.

Day 1 - It was a cold autumn day as I awoke. When we arrived at school, I said my goodbyes to my sister and my mum before heading off to the huge Pulhams bus outside. Woodlands Outdoor Education Centre, was printed in large bold letters on a sign. We had reached our destination. After having a short tour of the House we discovered who would be in our dorms. “In Twmpa we have Daisy, Orla, Mya, Natalia, Natalie, Emily and Lula.” Dan told us. That was my dorm. Our dorm slept eight even though we only had seven People. We unpacked a bit and had our first activities. Chriss, the head of Woodlands.O.E.C, was our instructor. Problem wall, Strike a note, Spider web, Balance Beam, Secret Maze and much more activities. You had Woodlands pounds to earn and each activity you would have to pay for. But on the bright side you would get a reward of money. You started with 250 Woodlands pounds and we ended with 2435 Woodlands Pounds! Chriss said that he hasn’t had a team with such a high score before! The food was delicious. After tea we had a night walk into a forest and it was so dark and petrifying. We changed into our pyjamas and had a mini session with Mrs.Barns before heading off to bed.

Day 2 – I woke up and boy was I TERRIFIED! Today was caving. This was the one I had been fearing for ages. Squeezing into tiny gaps was not my thing. We had our room inspection. We did a performance for a bonus point and got 6 out of 6. YAY!! We arrived at the cave called Porth Yr Ogof. We entered. It was dark and gloomy. I was still terrified. The first gap was called The Letter Box. Ok yeah it was petrifying but I did it. YIPEEEEE! Next was the Bedding Box. It was long and narrow. But I managed to pass it surprisingly. Chriss told us and shown us stalagmites and stalactites made from calcite. He thought we were responsible enough to do a part of the cave alone. We ventured through a small gap and I sort of got stuck. But not, at the same time. Basically I just froze and couldn’t move. At the end there was a slide and it was so fun. At the bottom of the slide was a puddle and everyone avoided the puddle but I slipped into it and got my bottom wet! Silly me!

Day 3 – This day I was going to get upset and cry. That’s what happened. But I didn’t know that would happen. We got dressed and after breakfast, we met Chriss in the kitchen in the Annex. We had to do the Jungle Gym!! Great. But before we did that we had to climb up the climbing wall which was 50 feet high. Yikes! It didn’t look that high. I was trying to persuade myself that I would pass my target but then I wasn’t too sure about that. On my first go I reached 19 feet. L On my second go I reached ten feet and wanted to come down but. Yes there is a but. I carried on going up to 18 feet. L By this time I lost complete hope of everything. I would never reach my target. I will never feel proud. And I will never be able to say I did it. Yes I know. What bad thoughts are those? We went for a quick jog and I started crying but I tried not to show it because I was embarrassed. Miss.Gale noticed and gave me a big hug. Everyone had finished before I even touched the wall. I started Miss.Gale gave me a boost and everyone was cheering me on. I didn’t want to let them down. When I was at 20 feet I wanted to come down so badly but I didn’t tell anyone. I carried on going up, up and up. BOOM! I reached 27 feet I hit it with my hand and everyone cheered. I wanted to get higher than my target I carried on going and stood on 27. I carried on going and reached 36 feet. YIPPEE!! When I came down Miss.Gale said tears where running down her face because she was so happy. Next, it was the Low ropes course, that was easy peasy! Next, my fear. I really thought of negative thoughts during this one. I went up the net and froze. I didn’t want to do it. Miss.Gale followed me. “COME ON MYA! YOU CAN DO IT!” Miss.Gale cheered me on. I looked away into the field next to me and saw rocks protruding from the ground. I was trying to get everything out of my mind. I stepped. Everyone was cheering me on. I couldn’t let them down. Before I knew, it I had reached the end of the whole course. WOOHOO! I WAS SO HAPY! The zip wire was next. I was so excited for it. When it was my go some people where racing me. I won. YAY! Everyone was so supportive this day. I actually want to do it again!

I am going to tell you about my amazing residential week and how it has helped me since then. It was when I was dragging my heavy luggage out from the bus I feast my eyes on a massive field surrounding the a tall building which, I thought was dorm rooms. Then we were greeted by a tall man who, said his name was Dan. Now he may not look tall to an adult but lets just say my neck hurt at the end of it from me having to look up at him every time he was talking. Once Dan had finished showing us around the main classroom, summer house, annex, cloak room, drying room and the big field he told us our dorm rooms. I was in a dorm with; my best friend Ruby and two other girls Emma and Tilly. Yes! I was living in the annex with a mix of Great Rissington and my school Upper Rissington. After, Dan finished the tour me and my friends headed to our dorm and unpacked all our belongings, placing them under and on top of our beds which, were really hard but Don’t worry because that didn’t defer us from having an excellent nights sleep from all the activities.

getting used to the routine we had to follow. Tuesday came and we where going caving first. Although, Im claustrophobic so this was a challenge. Since the holes we where climbing through where small, I unfortunately I didn’t take part in the first hole we climbed through mostly because it was smaller and Im a bit taller than everyone taking part. Because I faced my fears, I was relieved and continued the activity. I also went into another hole called the toilet.

Thursday came and so far I went canoeing and caving. Since High Ropes was today I was excited, but not just the high ropes zip wiring and climbing wall where also included YES! It was so amazing and it was a good way of getting to know other people I was In a group with Will H from our site and to other girls from the other site: Rosie Alvey who, is one of my closest friends being my next door neighbour, and Eve Crompton another person from Great Rissington.

It was Friday the saddest day but Im so glad I got to get to know other people from my site and from another school who was also very nice well, most of them. Once me and my roomates packed all our clothes and layed them neatly into out suitcases we all said our goodbyes to; Dan group ones main instructor; the other school who, where also leaving woodlands and Woodlands itself.

William.H

Monday,

On the first day I woke up, got my stuff, walked across to school and got on the coach. I was really exited but a little bit afraid to be away from for such a long time. Once we had finished the long and tiresome journey we got of the stuffy coach and then we actually saw the main house. It was marvellous! When Dan had told us where we were going to be sleeping and our activity group we went up to our dorms and unpacked, I was in Pen-y-fan. We made our beds (with a little help from handyman Scott) and went to the classroom which was our meeting point for the week and Dan went through the general rules of the week. After that we went to have lunch. It was the best lunch I’ve had in a while! We then did our first activity, Outdoor Business which consisted of us working as a team to complete different challenges. I’d say the hardest challenge was the tunnel which was extremely small and quite difficult. After that we went to have dinner. We then had a bit of free time where we played in our dorm. We then got ready for a night walk at 7 o’clock. Once we had walked for a while we turned around and headed back for the main house. We then got into our beds and drifted off to sleep.

Tuesday,

On Tuesday we went Caving! We woke up at 7:30 and we had breakfast. We met our group leaders in separate places. We got our caving equipment and got on the bus to Porth Yr Ogof, the cave we were going caving in. We first went through the letterbox which was a tiny hole that you had to crawl through, it was hard, but fun! We also went through some other holes called the wormhole and the white line. We then got out of the cave and went back to woodlands. We than did the shop that night and then went to sleep.

Wednesday,

On the 3rd day group 1 went canoeing! We had breakfast, (hash browns and eggs) we got dressed and then we met our group leader in the classroom and we then got onto the minibus which had the canoes on the trailer. Next we offloaded the canoes and put them into the ice cold water (as I find out later!) and Dan told us that the activity was dry so we wouldn’t get wet! We had to go with a girl so I went with Olivia. We started on our long trek along the water. Halfway we had our lunch and when we had finished we turned back and went the way we had come. When we did a trust challenge where you both had to lean over the side of the boat and trust your partner that she would not stop leaning over the side of the boat. Anyway she did and I fell in and I got very wet and cold. Our night activity was map orienteering. I was with Kenzie and Archie and we did really well!

Thursday,

We had high ropes! We got all of our equipment and got going on the high ropes! It is really high when you get up but I got used to it after a few minutes. The climbing wall and the high ropes was lots of fun. We watched a film then we went to bed.

Friday,

Today was mountain walking! We walked up Hay Bluff which was 667 meters above sea level! It took us a while, but after lots of snow and slippy grass we made it back to woodlands! We then got on the bus and drove back home. It was fun, but I’m glad I’m home.

It was so much fun!
