The metal workshop is currently split into two areas and is well equipped to cover a variety of fabrication processes. The first space contains equipment to turn, cut and bend mild steel complete with bench space for making and finishing. The second space consists of a number of welding bays, with an area dedicated to spot welding and soldering. These two spaces are equipped with hand tools, power tools and machinery needed to cut (shears, guillotine, horizontal bandsaw, cut off saw, angle grinders and various cutters), form (vices, rollers, folders) and join metal together (soldering, spot welding and MIG, TIG and arc welding).

After an initial introduction to the metal workshop, outlining health and safety issues and protocols you will be able to negotiate access to fabricate your designs. Depending on your course you may also have a more detailed induction based around a specific project. The workshop keeps a small selection of mild steel stock to purchase.

Attend an induction.
You will need to first attend a General Health & Safety induction. These are run in the first term. Please attend one as soon as you can as these are not repeated after the first term.

Check our opening times.
We are open daily however we may be closed for technical teaching sessions or maintenance. Check Moodle or our noticeboard for day-to-day open times.

Check the barrier
There is a limit of students allowed in the metal workshop at any one time. When the workshop is full there is a barrier at the entrance which is not to be crossed.

Personal Protective Equipment
If the barrier is open you can gain access once you have spoken to a technician. You will need to put on the workshop metal jacket and steel toe cap shoes before entering.

Speak to a technician
Before using any machinery, tools or materials, please speak to a technician so we can best help you to maximise your time in the workshop. You will need to show us drawings with dimensions so we can know what you want to build before you start.

Work safely and clean up after working
You are responsible for making sure you keep yourself and those around you in the workshop safe. We do not tolerate unsafe working practices. You need to clean up and put tools back in place after working, not doing so will limit your access to the workshop in future.

To purchase material
Speak to a technician. The material you need can be costed and quoted for. Payment needs to be made through the estore. Please be aware we are not a shop and material is subject to availability. Check our suppliers list for local and London wide shops we recommend to buy from.
