the first week back from the holidays we sat and was told what we would be doing this term and who we would be working with and that we had a workshop next week that had musicians coming in to teach us about our instruments. the group that I was put in and would be working with for two sessions were me, Morgan, Yvain and Tiegan. we got told who would be picking songs to perform within each group and in ours it was everyone apart from Tiegan that is picking a song. we then went into our groups and we decided what songs we were going to pick; we eventually chose our songs and they were, hey jude by the Beatles chosen from Morgan, 26 by paramore from me and girls, girls, girls by panic at the disco chosen from Yvian.

this week was the week of the workshop were the musicians came in and gave us a lesson. as a singer I was in the vocal workshop with Honey Williams and she went through different things with us. she first separated in sections depending if you was an alto, sopranos and tenors etc. and then we did a few exercises to find our diaphragm and to sing with it. we did vocal exercise such as scales nearer the end of the lesson. but she taught us a song and through it a section at a time and taught us how to harmonise as a group together. the style that she taught us was very Gospel, jazzy which put most of us out of our comfort zones

this week it was me, Tiegan and Morgan in room 3 working on mine and Morgan's recording. we practiced my song first called 26 by paramore and we went through it many times to get it right. Morgan played the keyboard for me on this song and Tiegan did backing vocals which I told her the parts that I would like her to sing to. the recording went well and was a good performance but with certain parts of the song there were some quite low notes that I struggled to get to sometimes but the rest of performance was good and Morgan and Tiegan did really well. we practiced Morgan's song but didn't have enough time or really know it well enough to perform it. he went through and me and Tiegan did backing vocals to the song hey jude and Morgan did the main vocals and keyboard. the song hey jude was alright but it was difficult putting it all together with everyones parts. but the overall lesson went good but if there was anything to improve on it was doing vocal warm ups so I can reach those lower notes

This week and magnet me, Yevin and Morgan were practicing and getting ready to record Morgan and Yevin songs. The songs were hey Jude and girls, girls,Boys by the Beatles and panic at the disco. Me and Yevin did backing vocals for Morgans song and getting the timings right. I struggled a little bit with some of the backing vocals just getting the right timings and making it consistent. When we practiced enough we got it recorded and it went well and it sounded really good and everyone did well. Then I did the backing vocals to girls, girls, boys and Yevin did the main vocals and Morgan did the keyboard. This song I was very comfortable with this song as I knew it very well and mine and Yevins vocals went really well together and we didn't need to much practice all together. The recording itself went really well and the overall session went good, I think what could of done better was knowing hey Jude a bit better so the performance went a bit a smoother.

This week I was with Rhys, Kane, Tiegan and Morgan and we practiced my song and Tiegans song. My song I chose was beautifully unconventional by wolf Alice; Tiegan did backing vocals for me and it look a bit of practice to get the backing vocals right as Tiegan was unsure how the song went. But after a bit of practice the recording went okay the only problem with the recording was I went a bit out of time in the middle of the song and I found it hard to sing as I was ill. Then we went through Tiegans song which was why's you only call me when your high by artic monkeys. I did backing vocals for Tiegans and the practicing process was alright it just took a bit of time but the recording itself went well. The thing that would improve the recordings is just practicing more as a group

this week i did my 10 minute workshop about different vocals techniques in different genres that i have chosen and the genres that i had chosen were indie, pop and acoustic/gospel. the first vocals technique i talked and demonstrated was about melasmatic techniques. melasmatic is were you sing more than one note for a each silabel, so i talked and explained what it was then i did a demonstration of two song both of them with melasmatic technique from two different genres, one indie and one pop. the songs were aint it fun by Paramore and the other beautifully unconventional by wolf alice. then after i did that i talked and explained about another vocal technique which was sustained notes; sustained notes are where certain notes are held for a longer period of time then the average note. for this genre i did the acoustic/gospel song which was can't help falling in love with you by Elvis Presley. i made the group that i giving my workshop to try the melasmatic technique but i didnt want to force them to do it so i left it with the sustained notes. at the end of the workshop i was asked about belting notes for an indie vocalist and why they would use it. and explained that to projected their voice and to show more emotion. and also to be heared with the other instruments. the rest of the lesson me, Kane,Rhys and Jordan were practicing for the maze gig for monday and were going through songs and the set list that we needed to do for the show. i though that the workshop went and that i delivered it with confidence but if i could change one thing would be to find more techniques to demonstrate and to learn and regarding the practice i think it went well but beautifully unconventional took a bit more practice to get right.
