For week 3, I was taught the importance of setting up a camera before shooting a scene in any condition. Although it applies to all cameras, these lessons were more specific to Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras as they are more versatile with multiple functions adapted to other forms of cameras. Besides that, the lecturers also covered the importance of multiple functions on a DSLR that are paramount to different situations such as environmental, sports or figure photography. The functions covered are aperture priority, shutter speed priority and auto just to name a few. As of now, I have gone through all the lessons offered for this week with the submission of photos for review and quizzes for marking. Overall, I am very satisfied with my submissions as well as my learnings this week. 

 Personally, I am happy and excited with these 4-week crash course. Initially, I bought my DSLR when I was in secondary school and it was a sizeable amount of money. To put it simply, most of my knowledge on a DSLR was unorthodox in the sense of self learning and taught by my peers. The fact that my camera is capable of so many functions really put me in awe. Besides that, I can also fully utilize my camera with this crash course due to their meticulous attention to detail on multiple functions of a DSLR and the pictures I can take in the future. All in all, I am very satisfied with my journey in this posting so far. 

 During my elective posting journey, there are multiple moments where my decision making is paramount. For instance, when I was deciding my course for elective posting, I was a bedazzled by the number of course offered. However, with my research and interests at hand, I decided to pick a course that not only is my interest and hobby, I also decided to pick one which can benefit me in the future as a creative doctor. Thus, I decided to start small and learn the basics of photography as a small stepping stone in pursuing my hobby. 

Besides that, decision making is also important in taking photos during my time in this course as my EP. When I take photographs, I need to make decisions on what to take and pick the best for submission every week. These decisions are vital and must be made correctly to capture the perfect moment every time. Thus, I believe this EP course has helped me a lot in decision making. 

 During my EP journey, I must manage my time carefully between gym as well as my classes online. This is important as I want to lead a healthier lifestyle and learn something new every day. At the same time, there are also multiple assignments every week which requires the student to take photos with the knowledge they obtained every week. This will take some time and a proper allocation for this slot is vital to complete the assignment every week. Once the photos are taken, some mild form of editing and cropping is needed before a proper submission. Finally, I would need to briefly study every week as there are quizzes which carries marks for the overall course of the week. This would require me to keep my information updated on each week’s course to pass and score above average.  

My next week would be my final week and all my knowledge would be tested in my final photo submission. Thus, I must revise past weeks lectures to ensure my knowledge is up to par for my assignments as well as my quiz. Furthermore, I would look around my neighborhood and my past photos if there are insufficient scenes for my photo submission. This is important to save some time during the actual capturing of the photos. All in all, I am very excited for my final week of this EP course.

This week in Spanish L3: Intermediate, I have learnt to form more complex sentences that involve the usage of future, present, progressive, preterit, perfect, imperfect, comparisons and superlatives tenses. I was also introduced to more vocabulary, especially that with regards to local cuisines, musical instruments, and cultural celebrations of Spain, Mexico and Columbia. Thankfully, the lessons of Spanish L3 gave much needed spotlight on areas that are more than the grammars (had a little break here at last). This has certainly helped to keep the sparks in me going to learn beyond the language.  

Three weeks have elapsed by since I started learning Spanish, and now I am finally-really seeing fruition of all the lessons that I have taken. As compared to who I was in the beginning, I have come further and understood the language better. The neurons in my brain have certainly made more sturdy connections, now that I can hear and/or read the language (with more complexity) and albeit still able to understand its meanings comprehensively. All in all, I am feeling happy, proud and satisfied with how I have progressed. However, the best is yet to come and I am looking forward to how I can still grow with the language. 

Throughout this journey, I have applied the skills in calculating, evaluating, taking needed time and utilising available resources to make considerations before coming with a decision. For example, I have applied all these while making the call to learn the Spanish language, deciding what I want to achieve by the end of the lessons and how I want to achieve it (via systematic daily routines). As to how I have gained these skills, I owe it to the past experiences that I have had and the people I have interacted with -colleagues, friends, family and teachers. At the present time and in the future, I hope to continuously learn and improve myself in this area since… life in itself is made up of a series of choices. 

To manage my time effectively throughout this Elective Posting journey, I came up with a routine/ schedule for myself to follow. In the morning, I will complete other tasks and commitments that I have at hand. After lunch, I will begin my lessons and carry on with it until the evening. I will only call it a day once I have achieved my daily goals. Weekends will be reserved for rejuvenation and also light reading/ recalling on what I have learnt for the past one week.

 

Next week, I will continue with Spanish L4: Advanced. The goal is to finish the contents within one week, with the help of quizzes and reading materials that UDEMY has provided. Afterwards, I will start drafting ideas for my video presentation and get working on the reflections.

For the third week, I learnt how to deploy some of common visual design ‘tricks’ such as contrast, repetition, sublimation and tension. Mr David compares the tricks with design examples from art history, film and current media. I enjoyed looking at the comparison because it taught me the skills of critical looking. I also learnt some strategy of composition and how to provide an obvious target for the audience. So, the design can provide clear visual communication.

This course is really attractive and easy to comprehend even though I do not have any designing- related background. I like how I can create or design a poster in a simple way by using ‘minimalism’. It is really important to remember that designing is all about how we can convey a message in the poster through design elements. 

In life, we can never run from making decisions because life is a matter of choices. In the graphic design course, I also have to make many choices in order to create a professional and yet attractive- looking poster. In order to make wise decisions, I will refer to the notes and gather information that is related to the problem. For instance, in the poster attached, I refer to week 3 notes that I did for myself and experiment with the knowledge that I learnt. Sometimes, the information that I learnt needs self assessment or reliable external sources. Most of the time, I will rely on my intuition which is based on my personal values and reasoning which is more based on facts taught by Mr David. Next, I will weigh or evaluate the informations that could lead me to the objectives that I have been seeking for. Lastly, I will implement actions in the poster that I have been working on which can be seen in the poster above.

I usually will plan ahead my weeks or time before I begin this EP journey so that I can monitor my own progress. If I feel overwhelmed or feeling distracted to join this online class, I will set a definite time limit and have a to-do list which keeps me focused and maintains momentum. The sweet satisfaction every time I ticked a task from the list keeps me motivated and makes this course even more enjoyable.

Plan for week 4 is I will learn how to take judgement in constructive criticism and yet be open to criticism. In addition, I will complete two practice quizzes compiling all subtopics that I have learnt in these three weeks.

for this week, we learned numbers from 1-100, how to ask questions like age, birthdays, number of family members. So far, I can manage to understand and make conversation with a new person which I apply what I have learned which include greetings, asking name, their age (+-birthdays), their hobbies, favorite foods/drinks, and others. I also learn something new by going through Mandarin Challenge of The Day videos posted on Kunkwan website. in addition, I have been making progress with EP expected output which is my notes.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I still have many things to learn in order to speak fluent Mandarin. However I am happy that I made it this far from not knowing anything to able to make simple conversation.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?
I only have a few classes left. I have to decide if I want to further my study to the next level which is HSK level 1 for 3 months. So I decided the foundation class is sufficient for me to learn the basics. I  can use Youtube, Coursera later and study on my own.   

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I attend class in the morning and allocate my time in the evening to study, do homework, revision and do my notes.

6. Your plan for next week (Week 4)
I will plan for the video and start recording the video and write my reflective writing.

For week 3, I was taught about more case particles が(ga), を(wo), に(ni). が is used to refer to the subject for example: The sky is blue. そらがあおいです。 を on the other hand, refers to the direct object for example: I'll have coffee. わたしはコーヒーをのみます。 Lastly, に is used to refer to time, location, for example: What time are you leaving? なんじにいきますか。
I was also taught about adverbs of degree such as とても(very), もっと(even more), まだまだ(still not, not yet). Examples of sentences:
- さかなはとてもたかいです。The fish is very expensive.

- でも、まだまだです。But, not yet.

3. Your feelings and thoughts
I feel like the Japanese language is very fun to learn, even though it can be difficult and overwhelming at times. There is so much more to learn and I've barely scratched the surface! But, I am happy with the progress I have made thus far.

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP?
With the elective posting, I had to make a choice of what I would like to spend my time on during my holidays. I had a few ideas in mind, however I ended up with choosing to learn Japanese instead. I had to be rational with my choice and be realistic. I had set goals of what I would do and wouldn't do, one of them is to not spend money on the project and to make do with what resources I have laying around me. Learning Japanese was easily the better option because there were courses online that are free, albeit needing to pay for the e-certificate which I forego. There are tons of websites and videos that teaches Japanese. I just have to be resourceful! Another reason was I wanted to choose something that was already integrated in my life. I have been watching Japanese shows every now and then since I was young, so I thought learning Japanese is a good way to go!

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey?
I don't really have a schedule set for learning Japanese. I just learn as I go with what free time I have. Although, it can be a struggle since I tend to forget to do the course from time to time.

2. Your progress so far

Progress is slow but steady. This time I learned about proverbs, how to converse, how to express myself, and requesting for help. This week is a pretty busy week as there has been so many new things to learn. However, with my teacher's help, I am able to cope and learn well.

I feel more insecure as the classes are getting tougher and more challenging. But I know when I put in the effort, I will be able to improve well 

 

4. How did you learn and apply the skill of decision making in your EP journey?

 I decided firmly that i wanted to take mandarin classes as these classes will help me in communicating with my friends, future colleagues and patients. 

5. How did you manage your time throughout this EP journey? 

I planned classes according to my free time, as I was also juggling revision sessions for my remedial paper. Usually I will have my mandarin classes in the afternoon while I revise for my exam in the 

morning and evening

I managed to complete lessons for week 4 and week 5. This time I learnt about colours, sizes, prices and even how to bargain in Chinese. But the tricky part was learning about transportation and directions. The Chinese characters really got my tongue twisted as I am not used to their pronunciation. Of course, nobody would expect me to master a foreign language in such a short time. I took my time to learn them and to practice them one by one. Nevertheless, it was a very enlightening journey. I get to learn words that were used on a daily basis.

 

I was really enjoying studying through an online course. Something I thought that would never occur to me. It’s been over 3 weeks since I started studying Chinese, and although I am still not as fluent as I hoped to be, I am still proud of my tiny accomplishments along the way. It has given me a positive impact and has built my self-confidence.

 

Life is about making choices. The choices you make shapes whoever you are today. I have considered many types of activities to do for this elective posting such as baking and even learning sign language. However, after weighing all the options that I have with their benefits and disadvantages there is to give me, I feel content with the choice that I made to learn Chinese. I love thinking that I am able to speak another local language right here in my country. 

 

To be honest, there wasn’t any fixed schedule to it. I did all my responsibilities back here at home first before using my free time to learn Chinese. I studied whenever I felt like it. That way I don’t feel pressured and actually enjoy my time studying the online course.

 

Since the holidays are coming to an end, there are other tasks that I need to complete for my EP submission such as reflective report and video presentation. Hence, I plan to complete my online Chinese course and to start preparing for my other tasks.
