What?
Feeding America (2017) described food insecurity as a absence of availability to food, which leads to a lack of a healthy life. There are so many people within our world that struggle with food insecurity on a daily basis. These people just simply do not have access to resources to provide themselves and their families with food. Food insecurity is often connected with low-income families, in which this affects the lack of food within their life. On the other hand, there are families above the poverty line that do struggle with food insecurity as well.

Hailey- This topic, food insecurity, impacts me because I have been around it and have seen it happen to people around me. Growing up, in school some of my classmates I know struggled with food insecurity, they depended on school for their meals. This was something that was hard for me to know and see because it is a heartbreaking thing that no person should experience. This is something I am passionate about even more now that I am going to school to become a teacher. As a teacher, I am going to see this amongst my students and I want to be the kind of teacher who students can come to in need of anything, especially if the lack the basic needs of life, food.

Taylor- I chose to do food insecurity because it is something that I will have to face when I become a teacher and something I have seen affect students. Having a mom as a teacher has really opened my eyes to all of the struggles everyone faces. I remember her sending home food to one of her students who did not have much. While I never understood what that student was going through, I remember feeling sad and empathizing with them because I knew they were going home hungry. Being a teacher means you have students from all different backgrounds, and unfortunately some children have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. As a soon to be teacher, I want all of my students to feel safe at home and be healthy. I want to help as much as I can because no child should go home hungry and be malnourished.

There is a need for change in food insecurity because not only is it affecting families and their lives, but also students. McCoy (2022) gives reasons as to what happens in students that are in a food insecurity situation. One of these reasons being stress and depression due to being food insecure. This affects the way a student does their school work, grades, etc. This is a huge deal and is why there needs to be a change within food insecure families and students. Students can't even achieve grades they deserve because they are hungry and lack the nutrients they need to be healthy.
Dana Point Times (2022) mentions how people who are food insecure are struggling to decide between food or health or transportation. This is absurd that this is even a thought amongst people. They should not have to choose between eating or healthcare. This is a huge reason as to why food insecurity needs to be changed. People should be able to eat healthy and get their nutrients along with being able to have access to healthcare.

According to CFBNJ (2020) a way to make a change is volunteering. This is a way that is very easy to help and improve food insecurity, all you have to do is go to your local food pantry or kitchen and volunteer. Another way to bring awareness to food insecurity is hosting a food bank. This is something that is very easy to coordinate and can help out a lot of families in need. These are just two ways, but there are a lot more things to do to take action and raise awareness for food insecurity.
