Matariki is the mother of the six other stars that make up the constellation of our maori new year and means the eyes of god. This is because when Ranginui and Papatuanuku where separated, Tawhirimatea ripped his eyes out and through them to the heavens through anger. Tupu-a-nuku is the eldest and spends time with Papatuanuku and tends to the forrestation, food and ground. Tupu-a-rangi loves to sing and has a song for every ocation. We learn from her the importance of sharing our gifts with others. Waipuna-a-rangi provides water for the people, animals and plants. She teaches that if you give, you will get a return. Waiti and Waita are twins that work together to help the insects and plants help each other. Teaches the importance of working together. Uru-a-rangi is about having a good attitude and bringing positives. Matariki watches over her children and helps them to do their best, she teaches the importance of acknowledging your parents.
