Very few of the young people with whom I work identify a religious affiliation so this is an idea I do not feel I have strong skills. One of my young people engaged with a multi-faith support team while in custody and in the lead up to his release we explored appropriate supports for him to continue accessing spiritual guidance and care in the community, however upon return to his previous peer group he appeared to become embarrassed by his links with such a support group and promptly disengaged. As peers are the strongest source of influence for adolescents, accessing spiritual support is often an 'uncool' and therefore discouraged activity amongst my clients. This reflection has reminded me however that spirituality can be invaluable in coping and therefore it would be beneficial for me to continue exploring spiritual growth with my clients.

I live in an Aboriginal community where spirituality is the focus of daily life. Of course my own personal spirituality is very different to theirs in practice but it helps me relate to my consumer on a spiritual level. In health care it is common to see western medicine work side by side with Aboriginal spiritual medicine. My strength for my consumers is that I understand and support their own spirituality and have even used it at times to build resilience in people who are depressed or suicidal. "Using drugs destroys the spirit in you and then you will be empty with no spirit". I can say this because it is part of the Indigenous understanding of the dangers of smoking marijuana.
