Step: Meeting the Mentor
Importance: This step is very very important because it encourages the hero and gives him confience. The mentors also give him the supplies needed to succeed. I see it when Zeus sends two immortals to help his son on his mission. The immortals (Athena and Hermes) provide Perseus with "a strong, sharp, sickle-shaped sword" (The Heroes 203) which was used to kill Medusa.

Step: Call to Adventure
Importance: This step provides the hero with the motivation and support he needs to go on the journey. Without ever being asked to go on this mission Persues would not have went in the 1st place. I can prove it with the quote "I command you to bring me the severd head of the Gorgon Medusa." (The Heroes 200) Previoulsy, Perseus volenteered to kill Medusa but he would have never done it with out the challenge from the king, proving he has courge but only with the support of others.

Step: Losing the Guide
Importance: This step shows growth and independence. When the hero is able to let go of his mentor, he is confident in his own abilities, without assistance. After slaying medusa, Perseus feels sure of himself and his skill. With the help of the winged shoes he departs from his mentors, Hermes and Athena, and flies home alone. The story says, "Perseus decided that he could fly home with medusa's head without further aid..." (The Heroes 204), illustrating the progress in his courage and confidence.

Step: Dragon Slaying
Importance: This step is able to illustrate the progression in Perseus' confidence. When the hero slays what is know to be the "biggest and baddest" it boosts his self esteem and makes him feel like the king. He kills the dragon when he "beheaded the mortal Gorgon with one slice of his sharp sickle." (The Heroes 204) then Perseus continues to use Medusas head throughout the story because its like a prize to him. It symbols his victory which proves he is pround of the mission he accomplished.

Step: The Labyrinth
Importance: This step helps develop the heros perserverence and ability to improvise. Throught the heros journey he/she must go on a adventure with many different experiences and outcomes. This really forces the hero to practice their quick thinking when things dont go according to plan. For example, when Perseus needed to get the directions to Medusa from the siter Gorgon, they would not give it to them and he had to think fast. "The next time the sister removed the eye from her head, he leaped up and grabbed it as it was changing hands." This provides an example of critical thinking on Persues' part because he knew they removed the shared eye that the Gorgons were totally blind. He then used that agaisnt them to get what he needed.

Step: Return with the Gift
Importance: When the hero returns home with the prize, he receives an official hero status as well as greater respect and pride. Perseus finally reaches Seriphus and tells of his long journey. However, Polydectes mocks him and requests another "children's tale". This infuriates Perseus and he says, "If you believe me shut your eyes, friends." (The Heroes 207), as he unveils Medusa's severed head, turning those who doubted him to stone. These scene shows Perseus growth from the beginning to the end of the story.
