Jane Eyre disparages the Reeds and their inhuman behavior:

~Storm/Shipwreck: The Bewick's History of British Birds showed themes of isolation and harsh conditions that relate to the emotions Jane feels throughout her time at Gateshead.
~Food: there is a lack of communion between Jane and the Reed's as they prevent her to eat with the rest of the family.

Motifs: The color red as seen in the red room of chapter two is symbolistic of death, mistreatment, pain, and fear. Jane is trapped in the red room as punishment for "starting" a fight with the bratty John Reed when she was the one being attacked. The room also happened to be the place where Mr.Reed, the nice uncle of jane, passed away.
