June 20th- This week my family and I are on the road to New Mexico & Arizona, so I packed lots to read along the way! Today I finished the Bluebonnet nominee, Nightmares! by Jason Segal & Kirsten Miller. What an adventure! This book has it all...action, mystery, creepy mansions, and some really nightmarish characters. For those of you who have heard me talk about the Night Gardener and how much it scared me last year, please know that this book is nowhere near as scary. In fact, I wasn't scared at all, but it is full of suspense. Check it out for yourself.

June 21st- I can't tell you how much I LOVE the book Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate. There is always one Bluebonnet nominee each year that really captures the heart and has a character that is so lovable, so unforgettable, with a story so captivating, that it actually changes you, as a reader. Crenshaw allows the reader to experience Jackson's life that is both heartbreaking and sweet, and leaves the reader with a real sense of compassion for those struggling to survive. If you only read one Bluebonnet nominee this year, make it Crenshaw.

June 22nd- Under a Pig Tree written by Margie Palatini is absolutely hilarious! This fun picture book was originally supposed to be titled Under a Fig Tree, but there was a slight mix-up and the publisher accidentally mistook the F in fig for a P, changing the book from one all about figs to one about pigs. This is such a creative book with illustrations that you've just got to see for yourself.

June 23rd- I just finished reading the picture book, Max's Dragon by Kate Banks. This is a great book for families to read together or for a quick read by yourself. What a wonderful day you can have with just a little imagination...just like Max has in this book!

June 24th- Well I certainly now know why Hiawatha and the Peacemaker by Robbie Robertson is one of this year's Bluebonnet nominees. This picture book is beautifully illustrated by David Shannon, one of my favorite authors & illustrators, and it tells the legendary story of how 5 different warring Iroquois tribes were able to find and keep peace amongst themselves. The message of peace and forgiveness is a lesson we can all learn from, and it reminds me of last year's Bluebonnet nominee Grandfather Ghandi by Arun Ghandi and Betthany Hegedus. Make sure to read the Author's Note at the end of the book. It really gives insight into how the author was inspired to write the book, and it gives background information that provides real factual details. This is a great read!

June 25th- Obviously, it's no wonder that I ADORE books about libraries, so I just had to read the sequel to the Library Dragon, Return of the Library Dragon by Carmen Agra Deedy. It was just as awesome as the first. In this book, Miss Lotty, librarian, is about to retire when she finds out the school's library is about to lose all of its books which will be replaced with technology instead. This makes Miss Lotty so mad, the Librarian Dragon begins to reemerge. Will Miss Lotty get her books back? Will the Library Dragon destroy the new library and everything in it? Read this short picture book to find out.

Goldilocks & Just One Bear by Leigh Hodgkinson is such a cute version of the classic folktale, Goldilocks & the Three Bears. In this version, it is Baby Bear that goes out alone and ends up in a stranger's house. He has a quite a surprise waiting for him there. I think my first graders would LOVE this book as a read-aloud.
