The way the lip plates work is by the mother cutting a slit in her daughter’s lower lip when she is about 15 or 16 years old. They then put in a wooden plug that will stay there for three months, until the wound is healed. The girl is then allowed to decided how big she wants the plate to get. The plates can get as big as 12 centimeters in diameter.

Obviously, the most interesting part I found was the lip plates, but more importantly why woman do it. It made me happy to know that these woman are not forced to do anything the do not want to do when it comes to this bizarre ritual. However it also makes me upset that this tribe has had to take drastic measure to keep tourist from disrespecting the woman. A quote from a Mursi woman even said "they are coming to take pictures of us, as if we were monkeys in a Zoo." Overall I find it fascinating that people live in such different ways in other cultures.
