The silent period: the idea that students who are ELL learners will be silent for a period of time when first learning a new language.

Knowing why English language learners are the way that they are can help teachers understand their students better. for example knowing that a student who is learning english for the first time might be silent for a short time period because they have anxiety, or are afraid of being wrong when they speak, will help educators to understand that it is not a negative behavior but something they are working through as a learner. When thinking about how we can form our philosophy to include this, we can include having some understanding and patience while students explore their new language.
