The first step to asses the risk is to identify it. The best way to do it is to walk around and think about anything that might cause harm to your service users. This might include the everyday routine, the activities done, behaviour, substances used.

The second step is to decide who might be harmed and how. In order to do this you have to think about everyone in your care home such as service users, staff, visitors. Cooperate with your employees, think about what could be the hazard and decide how to control the risk. think about the activities you're doing and take into account the possibility of harm.

The third step is to evaluate the risk. What you must do is make sure you know about the main risks and the things you need to do to manage them responsibly. You are not expected to anticipate unforeseeable risks but you can do everything to avoid the risk. As an example you can think about a less risky option, to prevent the accesses to the hazard, to provide safe equipment, to provide welfare facilities such as fist aid and washing facilities.

The fourth step is to make a record of your significant findings. the best way to do it is to write everything down such as what the hazards are, how can this affect your employees and how can you control the risks. Also you need to make sure that a risk assessment should be suitable and sufficient and it needs to demonstrate that

a proper check was made

you asked who might be affected and how

you dealt with all the obvious significant hazards and with the ones that might happen during an activity, taking into account the number of people who could be involved

the precautions are reasonable, the way to avoid the risk is reasonable and the remaining risk is low

you involved your employees in the process as their opinion matters

You need to take into account that if your workplace moves quite frequently you need to make sure that you anticipate the risks.
If your risk assessment has a numerous number of hazard then you need to put them in order of importance and address the most important risk first.

The fifth step is to review your risk assessment and update if necessary. Some of the workplaces stay the same but at some point you will decide to change the equipment or you will have to use different substances or anything like that. What you have to do is to check again, to ask yourself if you have done anything possible to avoid and to control the hazard, are any other improvements that need to be done, have you learned anything from previous accidents?

The risk assessment should have a level of risk because this is really helpful as you will know exactly how dangerous it is. To calculate the level of risk you will have to use these tables. The first one shows the likelihood of something to happen. it is numerate from 1 to 5. 1 being the less likely to happen and 5 being more likely to happen. Once you decided what is the probability then you look at the next table which is the severity. This shows how severe something is and it is also numerate from 1 to 5. 1 shows the less severity which could be solved with a patch while 5 could link even to death. After you have decided on both levels of likelihood and severity you multiply them and it gives you the level of risk.
So for example the level of risk during a tea and dance activity would be 2 as the likelihood would be 2 because it is possible for someone to spit their tea and the severity would be number 1 as the risk would be minimal.

Risk assessments should be reviewed after a period of time as the risks are constantly changing. Maybe the solution found for a specific risk is for a short period of time. You need to think about a way to control the risk for a long period of time. For example in a care home the electricity needs to be checked regularly as the service users might want to use it and there is a high chance to get electric shocks if the plugs are checked and safe for people to use.

Health and safety polices and procedures are essential for staff and service users to follow because they have to keep the environment safe. They have to ensure that the service users and service providers are safe and out of any risk. One of the policy they need to follow is checking ID when someone is coming into the care home to make sure they are identified to ensure that service users are safe and no one has the intention to harm them. Another policy would be to lock out during night to make sure that no one is trying to get out or no one is trying to come in.
In order for the staff to follow the policies and procedures they need to have access to it. These can be found either online, on the workplace site, either the employer can provide these when needed particularly when staff is new.
