         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Anastasia and Maya</strong><br>-An organized effort by Stalin to remove people from power in the Soviet Union between 1936-1938<br>-Arrests, imprisonment, or executions of millions of government members<br>-Also called "The Great Terror"<br>-Stalin claimed that "The Great Terror" was necessary to remove spies and threats of the Soviet Union.<br>-He reorganized the Soviet Union's police force in 1934<br>-Stalin had the NKVD interrogate and arrested people who were opposing him.<br>-People who weren't guilty of opposition had to confess by force.<br>-Friends and family of the arrested people were often arrested as well.<br>-The Purge included three major trials in 1936, 1937, and 1938<br>-People confessed to crimes they did not commit and the confessions were used to arrest others as well<br>-The Purge ended in 1938 but violence and fear was still used by Stalin<br>-Violence became very bloody during The Great Purge<br>-Many arrests spread throughout the NKVD and caused instability to the government</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>The gulag is a chain of concentration camps in the Soviet Union. Under Joseph Stalin's command, the Gulag punished political opponents. Around 17 million people were sent to the camps, and millions were either executed or worked to death. Four years after Stalin's death the camps were taken down. A prison system remained in the Soviet Union until 1991, when the country broke apart.<br><br>The prisoners were also used as a source of slave labor during the USSR's industrialization period. They helped to construct many electricity production plants, such as hydroelectric plants.</div>]]></description>

The Red army was formed by the government in the January of 1918. The Red army was created from a workers’ militia called the Red Guard. During the years of 1918 to 1920 The red army grew from around 300,00 soldiers to 5 million due to a civil war.
