- In Nov. 1917, the Bolsheviks imprisoned Nicholas and and his family (killed them in July 1918)

- He and his family were canonized (declared as saints) in 2000 by the Russian Orthodox Church

The Truman Doctrine

-In 1937, Mikhail Tukhachevsky, one of the highest-ranking Red Army officers was murdered by one of the purges that were ordered by the Soviet Dictator Joseph Stalin. 

-By 1941, Stalin expanded the Red Army to about 5 million soldiers and equipped the Army with new tanks and warplanes.

- A Non Aggression Pact was signed in 1939, which claimed that the Soviet Union and Germany would not attack each other. 

- The pact was broken by Germany in 1941 when it launched a surprise attack on the Soviet Union.
