         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>Hiram was born on September 27, 1827, and he passed on January 16, 1901</p></li><li><p>He was born in Cumberland county, NC , Baltimore </p></li><li><p>Hiram R. Revels became the first Black United States senator on this day. He represented the state of Mississippi. Revels was born in 1822 in Fayetteville County, NC. At that time, Blacks in the state were forbidden to learn to read and write, so as a young man, he moved to Ohio where he studied at a Quaker seminary.</p></li><li><p>Hiram broke new ground for African Americans in congress.</p></li></ul>]]></description>
