Featuring residential and commercial buildings, George Town represents the British era from the end of the 18th century. The two towns constitute a unique architectural and cultural townscape without parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia.
George Town was founded in 1786 as a free port to serve British interest in South-East Asia. The establishment of the port made George Town a centre for global trading, attracting foreign merchants, largely from China, India and Arab countries. As a result, George Town developed a 
multi-ethnic society that still exists today. This diversity is reflected in the architecture of the city, as well as its rich intangible cultural heritage.The independence of Malaya in 1957 and the formation of Federation of Malaysia in 1963 have had a significant impact on the political, economic and social activities in George Town. In particular, the revocation of the free trade port status in 1969 and the relocation of major port activities to Seberang Perai, in mainland Penang, led to high unemployment rates. The economic crisis was addressed through the establishment of the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone at the south-eastern end of Penang Island in 1972, and the transformation of George Town from an industrial, productive city into a service-oriented economy. The Control of Rent Act of 1966 aimed to address the shortage of housing during the Post-War period by regulating the rental market, specifically of buildings built before February 1948. The Act was repealed by 31 December 1999 as affordable housing was developed at satellite cities with the expansion of the city, leading to changes in the demographics and activities in the historic town. George Town was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2008. St. George’s Church is an elegant white building designed to incorporate Georgian, Neo-Classical and Palladian architectural styles.
The construction of St. George’s Church was a massive undertaking on the part of the East India Company, who held a charter to run Penang, then known as Prince of Wales Island, as a colony for the British Crown. There is a memorial to the founder of the colony, Sir Francis Light, directly in front of the Church, Sir Francis Light is credited with creating the first plan to build an Anglican Church in Penang although he died in 1794 some 24 years before the first service was held at St. George’s Church.
St. George’s Church was damaged by bombing in World War II and looted by the invading Japanese forces. In 1945, after recapturing the island, the British Government funded extensive repair work to the church bringing it back into use. The Church went into decline again after Malaysia became independent in 1957 as the new formed government of Malaysia stopped providing funding for maintenance. Large structures like St. George’s Church are expensive to maintain and the problem is compounded by the use of antiquated building materials and building methods in the original construction. It's connecting the city of George Town on Penang Island and Butterworth on the mainland. Penang ferry service began 1894 (128 years ago). Quah Beng Kee, an entrepreneur from Penang Island started the regular service eith his four brothers and forming a company named Beng Brothers. From 1924, the ferries operated by the Penang Port Commision (formerly Penang Harbour Board) through its subdiary, Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPC). Malaysia federal government transfered the service from PPC to Prasarana Malaysia and rebranded as Rapid Ferry in 2017. They only started to move to the jetty when the shipping or trade business grew at the waterfront. The Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower is an Moorish-style Jubilee clock tower located at the intersection of Light Street and Beach Street in George Town. Built to commemorate Queen Victoria's 1897 Diamond Jubilee. The tower is sixty feet tall, one foot for each year of Victoria's reign. A corner of the wall surrounding Fort Cornwallis is situated behind the tower.
The clock tower is slightly tilted, a result of bombing during the Second World War.

The Whiteaways building was built at a time when commercial and financial activities were booming in the area. It was also regarded as one of the finest blocks of offices in Penang. Its impressive architecture features beautiful eclectic-style windows, Scottish cast iron columns and grand granite staircases. Its charm was further accentuated by a decorative facade with plasterwork of flowers and garlands.
The site was restored and revived following the listing of George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.When renovation works completed in 2011, the place was renamed as The Whiteaways Arcade.Today, it houses a variety of businesses, from cafes and restaurants to retail and offices. Work will be more easier if had a good teamwork too!
Besides that, we also knew more about George Town by searching and gathering the informations. We realised that the buildings had different styles because of the histories. We also knew that how important that the historical buildings are and their beautiful.
While doing this project, sometimes we felt exhaustion and wanted give up, especially when we met problems. But, we didn't give up and be more patient to continue our works.
This project was the first time Daphne had fun in playing Minecraft.
