It can be used to effectively counter bullying in schools. When the British Sue Young developed this approach more than 30 years ago in her work as a special needs teacher, she had no idea how effective it would be. It was only when she evaluated her collected data on individual cases after a few years, in which other people had also worked with the method, that it became clear to her that the effectiveness was not a product of chance and also not dependent on the person. She then systematically began to disseminate the method through workshops, further training, books and film clips.

She was given the tools to apply and disseminate the approach by Sue Young about 12 years ago. The two have been working closely and amicably together ever since and constructively discuss the development of new variations of the method with each other. Katrin Berger works as a school counsellor for the education authority of the city of Bremen and as a self-employed owner and solution-focused trainer of the Lösungswerkstatt. As a school counsellor she works both on individual cases and with a focus on the whole class culture. Sue Young's peer support group method and Insoo Kim Berg's WOWW class coaching (working on what works) are the pillars of her work that help to create or maintain a friendly, supportive and good learning and social climate in the classroom.

Katalin is a coach, trainer of solution focused practitioners. Coming from an educational background she met what we call today solution focused brief coaching at its birth hour. She co-founded Solutionsurfers Hungary 2010 and trained with her colleauges many practitioners who do influential work by today. She also contributed to the use of this flexible and relational approach in several fields in Hungary and other countries by offering conferences and publishing important books on the topic translated into Hungarian. Against the main streem way of working they refused to solve the problems, which their clients brought into the counselling room. Rather, they used the time they had with them for solution building: invited clients to invent noticable details about what they wanted in their lives. This we call today the Solution Focused approach.
Steve de Shazer followed up this practice by placing their findings in context of fitting theories. 
The emerging Solution Focused approach to conversations found by today its use in all fields where people work toghether or want to achiev something. Emma has worked in mental health, education, traumatic incident response and was the national clinical advisor for suicide bereavement. Since 2010 Emma has been working for New Zealand Police, supporting families experiencing violence and abuse, and has a special interest in suicide prevention. She developed a project engaging with those in police custody, which she considers the highlight of her career. Emma is currently working as a Senior Psychologist at Royal New Zealand Police College where she delivers training to police recruits, and is leading the development of the coaching framework for leadership. She is the vice president of the Australasian Solution Focused Association, and has a small part time business delivering training, supervision and counselling.
Outside work, Emma is the mother of four children, a competitive swimmer, and a chocolate lover!
