This was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, to raise awareness of violence against women around the world. Unfortunately, violence against women is increasing - studies show that at least one in three woment will experience physical or emotional abuse in their lifetime. Mexican artist Elina chauvet has been using red shoes to mark the victims of violence and femicide. In exhibitions and installations in town and cities around the world, the red shoe has become a symbol in the fight for women's safety. The date chosen for this day marks the anniversary of the assassination on November 25 1960 of three political activists from the Dominican Republic, sisters Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, by order of the country's dictator. Many women experience violence and abuse, but change is possible if we work together.
