How Can Teachers Accommodate a Student with ADHD?

***The following strategies encourage the development of self-regulation***

Strategy 1: Have clear expectations- Establish a routine that stays consistent even when an unusual event such as an assembly occurs. Teach rules through the same few strategies during a lesson, such as providing an example or acting out what is expected. This will assist in listening skills and allowing the child to feel secure with no surprises.

Strategy 2: Let students move- With a goal of increasing focus time to 15-25 minutes of working time/concentration, use a brain break as a reward. During the break give them the opportunity to dance, talk with a friend, stretch or walk around and then move on until the next reward. Overtime strive to more work time depending on the improvement of the child.

Strategy 3: Provide deadlines- work on time management skills by providing the following: breaking the project or assignment into chunks, provide a detailed explanation, provide a rubric and a clear due date. This teaches how to break up lengthy work into a timely manner promising completion.

Source: edutopia.org
