Duffy was born in Glasgow on December 23, 1955. She is of Irish descent. She attended Roman Catholic Primary and middle schools, then Stafford High. Her passion for reading and writing was encouraged by two of her English teachers, and developed by poet Adrian Henri, who was one of a trio of Liverpool poets that anthologized as 'The Mersey Sound'. She lived romantically with him until 1982. She went to college in 1977 and became more known after winning the National Poetry Competition in 1983. (British Council & Scottish Poetry Library).

Worked publishing several books and traveled to read and teach her poetry. Worked as a poetry critic for The Guardian from 1988 to 1989, and as an editor for the poetry magazine Ambit. In 1996 she began to lecture in poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she became creative director of the Writing School. Anvil Poetry Press became her publisher for Standing Female Nude in 1985; Selling Manhattan (1987) brought her the Somerset Maugham Award, and gained other accolades with her poetry. Received multiple accolades the Eric Gregory Award in 1984, and the Cholmondeley Award in 1992 from the Society of Authors. She also won the Dylan Thomas Award from the Poetry Society in 1989, and a Lannan Literary Award from the Lanna Foundation (USA) in 1995. She was awarded an OBE in 1995, a CBE in 2001, and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1999.
