Imperialistic effects on Soca Music today.

19/04/2017 @ 2:02 P.M.

Calypso Rose and Machel Montano, for Trinidad Carnival 2017, released a song called “Leave Me Alone”. In this song, world renowned calypso artist, Calypso Rose teams up with Machel Montano to step back into the music scene and unlike this year’s Soca music that included a feature of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) DJ’s, suggesting the American Influence on the music in the Caribbean as opposed to the original Indian and African influences showing the imperialistic effect on Caribbean natives to “fit in” to what is seemed to be the more widely enjoyed music genre as most music is computer generated. “Leave Me Alone” included more traditional instruments such as guitar, keyboards and drums. The song includes lyrics like “From back in a d day. Till I whole and I play I prepared for d jumpin! If yuh 15 or 25 If yuh 50 or 75 Once yuh breathing and you alive So we whining all day! I aint going home So leave me alone I aint going home So leave me alone I aint going” meaning their music, the music that they grew up dancing to will forever last in their minds, no matter what age a person is, they’ll be able to enjoy the music of their country because it allows unity among citizens and this adds to our Caribbean identity.

Soca : Bringing the Caribbean together, one tune at a time.

17/04/2017 @ 5:15 P.M.
It is said that music brings people together, and in this case we look at the correlation of cultures and the obvious wide scale effect that Soca has on mostly Trinidadians and Bajans, for instance artistes such as Rupee and King Bubba. The mixing of cultures shows us that although there is a distance between the islands itself in these Lesser Antilles, Soca is becoming both island wide and worldwide. King Bubba FM’s song for Cropover 2017 “Calling in Sick”, was so intensely appreciated by Trinidadians that the song actually had a chance to win the International Soca Monarch, a competition that portrayed Soca talents from every walk of life, and for there to be an ISM competition, it really showed us that our entertainment is appreciated all around the world. For instance, for Kes the Band’s Tuesday on the Rocks festival, artistes such as Barrington Levy, Voice, Ravi B and Rupee performed their most famous tunes and to see the extent to which the crowd respected each artiste, it helped me realize how much our music brings us all together, how we unite over something as simple as song. No matter where you are from, music is a universal language

Over-sexualization of Carnival in relation to Carnival Costumes and Soca.

10/04/2017 @ 6:26 P.M
The oversexualizing of carnival costumes and the lyrics of Soca Songs over the past years has caused a problem with the public especially women who deal with the sexist remarks from others. The carnival costumes in Trinidad have transformed over the years and there are, dare to say, less and less of a costume for more and more of a price. On average a sustainable carnival costume costs $3000 however with every uproar, Caribbean people still pay the price of these now scantily clad costumes. With the influences of our carnival costumes versus Cropover costumes versus Brazil’s Carnival costumes, they all look the same. The problem of oversexualizing the costumes are based on the people who have no clue of our background. How carnival came about, how do we continue to grasp the meaning behind what carnival is about. Lyrics have become soley based on “taking a wine in somebody fete.” It isn’t about wining and “jammin’ still”, it’s about the celebrations of freedom, enjoying oneself and understanding that our Carnival stemmed from “Canboulay” ( The precursor to carnival, celebrated by slaves whom could not attend the masquerade balls thrown by their plantation owners) instead of oversexualizing Carnival, embrace the history behind the celebrations we spend all year preparing for. Especially when women are usually the ones being judged on the costumes being worn, no woman should have to feel embarrassed for a costume they bought. Embrace the gender equality (and if you can’t find any equality, start standing up for your sisters)

20/04/2017
At the beginning of this course, I had no expectations since I'm not a fan of history, however there were some topics that really stood out to me. The topic of Caribbean Identity in relation to our traditions made me do some reflecting about who I am, who we are as a country and also a Caribbean and how music helps bring us together. I Have come to the conclusion that unity based on Music does exist however this bound to change. This course has also made me respect the history of the Caribbean a lot more and helped me to understand why we are the people we are today. It was a pleasure doing this course, of course I look forward to seeing my hard work pay off.
