The title of my poem is "Rain" and the author is Kazim Ali. He wrote this poem in 2005. The speaker of the poem is alone and the rain distracts from his solitary life, so I think the tone is sentimental and tranquil. He also wrote it to show that people are lucky for having people that care about them. I chose this poem because I love when it rains and I appreciated Ali's use of imagery. My photo connects to my poem because it is a photo of a person sitting alone in the rain.

Poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. Rap can be poetry. According to Jay Z, there is great, thought-provoking writing in rap music. He wants listeners to consider why the lyrics are written the way that they are, which goes along with the definition of poetry. Rap music can lead to imaginative, beautiful, or elevated thoughts. Others might say that rap is just party music and has no real meaning to it. Jay Z acknowledges this and points out that if there is thought, intelligence, reason, and logic behind it, then it is poetry.

“Poetry.” Dictionary.com.

Extended Metaphor

A metaphor for the cycle of life is a tree. The stages are the seed, the sprout, the sapling, the mature tree, and the snag. The first stage is the seed, which must be planted. Each time that God creates a new human being, he is planting a seed of a person into the world. Next is the sprout. The person is born and learns basic human tasks, such as speaking and walking. The sapling is a young person in school. They are bigger than when they were a sprout, but still much smaller than a mature tree. The sapling has become their own tree/person, but they still have so much more to learn and accomplish. It is the growing stage. The mature tree is the adult. As a person, they have settled. They know what they want to do with their life and they have done it. They are still learning and growing, but are far wiser and have experienced a lot more. The final stage is the snag. The snag is in its final stages of life. As a person, the snag is older and wiser. Soon enough, the snag dies. These examples show how the cycle of life for a tree is a metaphor for the cycle of life for a human.

Whitman is saying that you will leave a mark on the world during your time spent on Earth. He uses a play as a metaphor for life, and each person that goes onto the stage (each person that lives) will contribute a verse. This is saying that each person will contribute something different in life. I do not know what my purpose is yet, or exactly what I would like to contribute to life. However, I know that I want my verse to be contributed as a person who spent time helping others.

Final Padlet Reflection

My opinion of poetry has changed since my first Padlet entry. I have learned a lot more about poetry than I previously knew. I have never deeply analyzed a poem before, so I feel that I know much more than I did before this unit.

I mostly prepared by constantly reciting my poem. I knew it very well on the day of my presentation, which is why I am disappointed that I had to request a line. However, the problem was not that I did not know the poem well. The reason I blanked was that I was reciting in front of the entire class, and I grew nervous. Besides that, I feel like my recitation went well, especially because I do not enjoy Poetry Out Loud.

I would tell a future student to just relax. It sounds simple, but it would have helped me to know beforehand. When presenting in front of the class, it can feel like everyone cares a lot about what you do, which makes the recitation stressful. However, they typically do not care nearly as much as you think they do. Most people are more worried about themselves and their own poetry recitations while others are presenting. If I had had that mindset, I most likely would not have forgotten a line.

My favorite aspect of our poetry unit was Padlet. The prompts always pushed us to think outside of the box and write creative, thoughtful answers. I also enjoyed how we could go back to Padlet at any moment and edit the textboxes. It made it easy to complete the assignments.

I would like to learn more about slam poetry. I have watched a couple videos of slam poetry and I find it to be interesting. It seems to be very popular and it would most likely be an intriguing lesson.
