When Lionel has an unexpected violent manic episode linked to his bipolar disorder, Suzette’s parents send her off to Massachusetts to attend a private school for the next year. Suzette not only deals with the guilt of leaving her best friend and stepbrother alone in a dark time, but she struggles with her sexual identity. Anyway, after her year away, Suzette comes home and knows that she is Bi. Meanwhile, Lionel asking a girl out on a date seems to be his first outlet that takes his mind off his disorder—this girl is non-other than Rafaela—who Suzette works with and has a crush on. Suzette is simultaneously seeing Emil, who’s been a family friend forever because she always has Lionel’s best interest in mind. Suzette is constantly trying to protect Lionel and feels responsible for his happiness and well-being and it is draining. He puts the burden on her of telling only her that he has stopped taking his vital medications and she values his trust so much she does not tell his parents. By the end Suzette comes to terms with her not only her sexuality but that Lionel is not her sole responsibility.

During that 30 minutes students are alone and unsupervised and able to explore and experience the good, the bad, the ugly and the interesting with no one watching, well almost no one watching, their friends are there, their partner in crime, their friend to help clean up the mess or the whatever.

Jason Reynold’s book Look Both Ways captures the moment the bell rings and what happens as students begin their walk home. It is told in 10 blocks, these 10 blocks represent different socioeconomic areas around Lantier Middle School. In the book we see inside the lives of some students and what they are dealing with, overcoming and forced to endure.
