Challenges with unit planning

This part of the course was challenging for me because my teaching situation doesn't lend itself to units - long, connected instructional chunks that build on each other. My students are often not in the program for more than a few months at a time, and due to the stressors of their lives, they stop in and out quite a bit, making units of instruction difficult to implement. For my curriculum, I chose to do problem-based learning, "a student-centered approach in which students learn about a subject by working in groups to solve an open-ended problem. This problem is what drives the motivation and the learning" (Introduction to Problem-Based Learning). I chose to focus on a problem that would be relevant to them, the question of how to get more people to become electricians. I hope I can try this curriculum at some point, but right now our program is not set up to make it easy to do so.

As Jeanine started in her reflection post that trying to follow these plans unless I have an enter class that is working on math, and they are at the same point it makes it hard. I also have students that can be around until there done with their GED or can leave at any point in time. This makes it hard to keep everyone on the same page. I believe that I will need to have one of these for each subject to find out where my students are when they come into class for the first time and see what they know or don't know and proceed with easier things to help them show progress.
