I was surprised when the book mentioned how there were 1,000 children skipping school to get equal rights. It surprised me even more when it said that there were no adults because they were afraid to lose their jobs. I am making a connection right now to the book "Let the children march." The kids marched instead of the parents for the same reason. Also, in both books, everyone was sprayed with fire hoses and put into prison. Even after that, everything was segregated. Even CHURCHES!!!!!!!! Were segregated. The Jim Crow laws were laws where everything was segregated. If you broke these laws, you were either beaten or killed. My thinking went from, "Wow, segregation is really bad." to "Segregation is horrible!!!!!!!"

When it said that the parents did not go because they were going to lose their jobs, I was like " Come on parents your children are protesting, and you arent." that made me annoyed. It made me mad when the white police officers smacked KIDS with their clubs, or attacked them using their police dogs. THERE JUST KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I were one of those black kids going through that terrible time I would have skipped school too. The children were brave and went to the march but the adults; they just stayed home because they were worried about their jobs when they should be worrying about their freedom. Hundreds of the kids that marched were imprisoned and they were taken to the prison on a school bus. The rest were sprayed with high powered fire hoses by and beaten with and even being attacked by police dogs by the people who should be helping the children. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

l am mad. Why would someone think it is ok to do this to group of people? If any segregation supporter would to put themselves in any of the black people's shoes they would realize that they were the worst person in the world. Police officers that are supposed to protect people are hurting innocent children just because they want to be treated equally. Those aren't real officers, they are oppressors of anyone different then them. That is not the type of person that you want to protect your home. That is not the kind of person that you want to help your grandma cross the street.
How do people live with themselves after they do things like this. They would hurt people and KILL people just because they have a different skin tone. The black parents were scared to protest because they thought they could lose their jobs, which I am almost positive didn't pay much.
I do not know how someone would even think about killing their PRESIDENT just because he want to help ALL his people. People do crazy things to get what they want.

It makes me angry when those kids were attacked by policemen. They were just kids who were cutting school to do a PEACEFUL PROTEST because the grown ups were to scared to do it. All Those kids put in jail or hit by clubs or bit by dogs. Another thing where was the Police's remorse at the time. How could they not be sorry for attacking a bunch of kids who were PEACEFULLY PROTESTING. And the segregation Those kids deserve better education, the ability to go to better restaurants and to be able to have better medicine.

Like many of you, my surprise was in outrage (Nathan), and wonder about parents allowing their kids to skip school (Will). But then, as the first chapter sat with me, I started to think about why the parents didn't skp work. Think about it - who more than likely owned the businesses back then? If you took the day off and went and protested, what would those employers have done to you? Would those employers, whom I presume were white, have said - 'Oh, go ahead, take the day to protest about people treating you badly even though I am more than likely one of the people treating you badly." Probably not. I am sure the parents were scared that they would lose their jobs, and then what? Would they be able to get a job somewhere else? It is all so systemic, which is a word that we keep talking about.

I am pretty sure that those parents were hoping that those who were to protect them, "the officers" would do just that - protect them... but alas, it was not the cases. This is just the start of what becomes a long battle for rights of all people, regardless of skin color, religion, disability, etc...

When they would take children to jail they would use school buses or they would beet them or they would let there dogs attack them that reminds me of Amon Goeth and how he would have his dog kill the preisner. that is just so wrong it makes me so so so so mad that what they did. After what happened they agreed to stop dut the 1960 where still a very hard time for african americans.

It's all just so wrong. Killing, hurting, and wounding all of these innocent people. They just wanted the America they were promised. In the Constitution it states ¨All men created equal¨, last time I checked, people of color are also men (human). If people fought so hard for the constitution, and for America to be finalized, than why did they just go against it? Why did they think that was okay? If they were going to do all this segregation after fighting for the constitution, they could have just said ¨all WHITE men created equal¨. It makes me so mad. Children got pulled out of school to protest. I can see why they would want to do this because its harder to hurt children, but still, they´re losing learning time to something that should already be a given. The fact that everything was segregated was almost to crazy. Everytime I hear a story about someone dying because they have to drive all the way to the colored hospital, I always get so sad. It's hard to believe that what we call home was once like this.

I hate segregation! Before I would go out and act, I would gain strength and arm myself so I could defend those innocent kids and teach those small minded police a lesson and steal the clubs or put all the dogs in a cage and train them to be nice. Just beating up all those kids wants me to whack those police with a baseball bat and show them what it feels like to be treated this way! Even though people have different colored skin, they are still people. It was just so unfair. I wish the kids could fight back! I wish those police just saw what they were doing and quit being jerks! I hate it when people whack those innocent kids and make their dogs get them and hurt them! It was all so pointless! I just love it when segregation ended. I'm so glad that Martin Luther king JR created the civil rights movement to end the dumb and pointless segregation. Martin was such an awesome man! And Lincoln was right to sign the Emancipation Proclamation and ended slavery!

People of color were being treated like dirt during the 60s and many of them did things that got them beat or taken to jail. Despite all they did it took a long time for white people to realize that they were doing wrong and finally in 1964 the CIvil RIghts act was made. It took over 150 years for black Americans to have the right to vote and to be able to go theaters and bathrooms with white Americans. I get why the adults didn't want to march and protest because they could lose their jobs and they wouldn't be able to feed their families. What the children did was very brave and I wonder how the parents felt when their children went jail and got beaten up! I would be so worried about my children but I would also be very proud of them for what they did. All the children that marched were brave and I was so surprised when the book said that 1000 people got arrested in Birmingham! The past is a lesson to future generations but i'm worried about the future of how the world would look like, they can learn from them or ignore them.

They protested in Birmingham Alabama even though they got beaten up. They couldn't go anywhere freely but they couldn't go to grocery stores, churches, movie theaters, schools, and restaurants had to be seperated because of the Jim Crow law.

I don't even want to think about everything that OUR country did to people of color. The children were helping in every way, in my opinion the adults should have been in teh marches too. If I put myslefe in the parents shoes I would be doing everyhintg for the children. Even if they were not mine, I would just hope they could have a better life. The kids knew what life would be like if they just let all this happen. And thye didn't just let it happen, they took action in a peacful way.
The Jim Crow laws were the worst laws ever. They basicly keep the white people from being "tainted" by people of color. They even seperated hospitals!?! So if you were black and got shot, you would have less of a chance to survive than if a white person got shot. That makes me want to go back to those times, and start a war earlier to give freedom to everyone quicker.

Kids couldn't go to school. they couldn't go restaurants, they could not use the some water fountain, and could not go to work. They protested because they wanted this to end. Then when white officers saw what they were doing they would put them in jail, beat them and spray them with heavy water. Then JFK agreed to stop this then he went to jail.
