The epidemic killed upwards of 1/3 of the population. The plague which struck Athens was the most lethal episode of illness in the period of Classical Greece history. Typhus, typhoid, smallpox, bubonic plague and a combination of the the four mentioned were all offered as the culprit. Another strange medical use one was if you had pain in your side, blood was drawn form the elbow until it is bright red. Offering to Greek Gods was also believed to help cure you. Most memorable for the Hippocratic oath, a code of ethics, it is suspected many of his writings were written by other people. He was the first physician that believed thoughts and feelings came from the brain, not the heart. He was also able to describe symptoms accurately and was aware of the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
