Creon is the antagonist of the play Antigone, and is the Uncle of the main character, Antigone. He is also the current king in the play. Creon is a prideful ruler and is intolerant of anyone who views differently from him. He is only interested in maintaining order, rather than pursuing what is right.

In the play, Creon decides to give only Eteocles a proper burial because of his decision to fight for his nation. He decides that Polyneices, the traitor, should be left out on the battlefield to be consumed by carrion birds. After finding out Antigone had attempted to bury Polyneices, he has her sentenced to death by stoning, but later changes her sentencing and sends her to a cave to starve. He refuses to accept the fact that any of his decisions were wrong, ultimately resulting in the loss of his son and wife.

Creon is solely driven by the need to maintain order in his society. He makes his judgements purely off of what he deems as correct and beneficial for him. He sentences Antigone to death because of her decision to disobey his laws and follow the gods' will. Creon also lets his pride influence many of his decisions. When confronted by Teiresias, he refuses to accept his prophecy and disregards all of his statements due to the fact that they contradicted his beliefs.

I chose Creon to analyze because I simply found his character interesting. He is prideful and determined to do what he believes better suits his people. Creon is also interesting due the fact that his intolerance makes him a tragic character, as he is forced to live the rest of his life knowing that he caused the deaths of his wife and son.
