Overharvesting happens when the rate of fishing is greater than the rate of reproduction in an area

This can change entire ecosystems when one population disappears causing organisms to adapt, migrate, or die.

Imagine the number of shrimp are getting overharvested. The Gadus Morhua is a type of Atlantic Cod who eats shrimp. The Gadus Morhua dies from starvation because the shrimp are missing. The seals that eat Gadus Morhua suddenly have a choice, adapt, migrate, or die.

Overharvesting can force humans to find alternate food sources.

This problem can also cause jobs to decrease and food starvation to increase.

If overharvesting continues jobs that require fish or other aquatic creatures will go out of buisiness.

Overharvesting effects the ocean by killing those who inhabit the ocean by killing certain species

An artificial reef is a man-made underwater structure, typically built to promote marine life in areas with a generally featureless bottom, to control erosion, block ship passage, block the use of trawling nets, or improve surfing.

Our artificial reefs support more than just fish. They support jobs and people that earn a living from tourism associated with diving and fishing. In 1998, Florida State University researchers, estimated fishing and diving activities supported nearly 8,136 jobs and 84 million dollars in salary each year in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, and Bay counties. Despite the age of the study, it provides an idea of how vital artificial reefs and marine recreation are to Northwest Florida.

EXAMPLE:
The world's largest artificial reef was created by the purposeful sinking of the 44,000 ton aircraft carrier USS Oriskany off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, in 2006.
