But I was never alone. My wife, who was my girlfriend back then, was always by my side. She celebrated my birthday with me in the most unique way—by helping me get through my ACCA exams. I still vividly remember the time when I was about to take my last paper, Singapore Advanced Taxation. I felt so unprepared that I told her I didn’t want to waste money on the exam enrollment. But as always, she encouraged me to give it a shot. Her unwavering support pushed me to take the exam, and when I passed, I was so overwhelmed with emotion. That moment was unforgettable. I was on an overseas audit business trip when I saw the results, and I immediately booked a flight for her to join me and celebrate.

As for my mother, I owe her just as much. Every night during my revision, she would make me a Big Jug of Kopi-O that could last me the whole night. She would always tell me not to study too hard, worrying that I might ki-siao (go crazy) from the pressure of balancing work and exams. I don’t know where on earth you can find such a lovely mother who tells her kid not to study too hard—it’s almost funny, but it shows how much she cared.

These two amazing women have been my pillars of strength throughout my ACCA journey. Without their love, support, and encouragement, I wouldn’t have made it this far. I’m truly grateful to have them by my side.

When I first started my ACCA journey, I was unsure did I make the right choice to juggle work and study at the same time. I constantly shared my challenges and frustrations with my mother.

There were many times I wanted to give up. However, my mother always tried to press me on with her encouragement and motivation. She emphasized that hard work and sincerity truly are the key ingredients in achieving one’s dreams.

My mother cheered me on each time I passed my exam or made advancement in my career.  

Eventually, I graduated and attended my ACCA Convocation 1998 Jointly organized by ACCA & Singapore Accountancy Academy at Westin Stamford Hotel.

Shortly after my ACCA graduation, my company recognized my effort, and I received my first promotion in my first job. The experience is indeed unforgettable.

CHOICES IN LIFE

Sometimes I had to make difficult decisions such as switching my comfortable job in corporate as a Head of Department to an Academia role. She made my decision-making process so much easier by advising me to follow my heart.

Subsequently, I took on the role as Head of ACCA & Professional Programme at Singapore Accountancy Academy (SAA).

 This was only possible because mother, you made me realize my full potential. I am indeed blessed to be part of many students’ successful Learning Journey.

PASSING THE TORCH

Now being an established and experienced instructor running my own training firm, I am practicing my mother’s words of wisdom to pass the torch of hope and optimism to the next generations of accountants.

I still remember the days when I had to call my dad using public coin phones for him to open the ACCA envelope and read out my exam results over the phone, because these letters had to be sent to my permanent address in my hometown, while I studied & worked in Kuala Lumpur and did not really have a permanent address. 

When I attended the ACCA graduation ceremony in May 1997, I was very glad to share my joy with my parents and loved ones. Shortly after that, the Asian Financial Crisis ravaged the economies. Through the economic storms and depression, the ACCA qualification remains my strong foundation, opening doors and creating opportunities.  

This remains true to this day. I want to wish a loving and grateful thank you to my parents, wife & boys, siblings and the ACCA friends and communities whom I am blessed with. Without you I will not be where I am today. 

To quote a famous Chinese idiom from my boy’s school: 

飲水思源 which translates into ‘when drinking water, think of its source’. Remember those who helped you along the way, and honour them by giving back.

I worked in Dad's office as a costing clerk, every month a container load of Nike shoes came in and I did the costing of each shoe, each model. It was a dreadful time of the month!

He believed that I could be an accountant, a Phil Knight, a great Auditor like Uncle Cecil, afterall, they studied accountancy. ACCA was selected as you could study and work at the same time, select the options at each level, and face the challenge of passing all 4 papers in Level 3.

Yeah Dad, in the last 25 years, I made it as a full 9 years ACCA Global Council member, the first female from Singapore, Chairwoman of ACCA Singapore members Network, member of ACCA's Global Forum in Taxation, Business Law, Qualifications Board, Nomination Committee, International Assembly member etc meeting and inspiring other ACCA members from around the world. The day we opened the letter containing my results was a nerve-wracking experience, but our collective anxiety turned to jubilation – I had passed!

If you ever knew me before, I am a self-claimed “introverted” person who would hide behind the curtains if needed to speak in front of even 10 people. With ACCA, I have gained the confidence to represent myself as a proud ACCA Network Panel member.

Before 2020, I always wondered how to be confident. I used to feel that speaking in public required great courage and constant practice, but I had never gained that confidence. I admired my bosses who could speak so confidently!

I recently attended an NTU workshop, and based on a survey by Eurich, 95% of us believe we know ourselves, but in fact, only 15% really do. Self-awareness is the key to knowing yourself and your identity, and this is a skill that can be developed. That’s where my journey started. I began to know my identity alongside with self-awareness, I had ignited my self-confidence. “You don’t know what you don’t know”.  That’s where you will see possibilities to grow, enhance, and find solutions to your doubts. ACCA has certainly given me this opportunity to know enhance my confidence and understand what the platform can provides. It is more than what you already know. ACCA allows me to participate in many networking sessions, seminars, workshops, and events that challenge me to be out of my comfort zone. As a ACCA representative, I was a Blackline panelist event, spoken about finance sustainability at the ACCA Indonesia Event with BINUS University, and featured in the ACCA AB Magazine. I could never have imagined that such events would be significant milestones in my life, making me extraordinary from my perspective – “ah-ha moment”. I have met so many people that shared their amazing stories and experiences that have contributed me to see from a even broader spectrum of reality and its mind-blowing how little did I know and how much more can I learn from it.

I would never be in this new milestone if I hadn’t taken the step to develop self-awareness, know my identity, to be part of ACCA Network Panel Member. If you have a perspective that ACCA is just an exam/course/title, look again at what you can achieve beyond it and see the possibilities of what ACA can do. With ACCA, there’s a great resources, networks and connections available to assist your journey and career, wider than you can imagine. As ACCA celebrates its 88th anniversary, I find myself reflecting on my journey and the profound impact this institution has had on my life. In 2008, the world was in the grip of a financial crisis. My parents were facing significant financial difficulties. I had no relevant degree, no clear path forward, and the future seemed uncertain.

But then, I found ACCA.

ACCA didn’t just offer me a qualification; it provided me with a lifeline. The knowledge and skills I gained gave me the tools to navigate the challenging financial landscape and, more importantly, to help my parents overcome the difficulties we faced. Without ACCA, I would not have been able to contribute to my family’s recovery, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

This journey wasn’t mine alone. I owe a special thanks to my parents, whose unwavering support kept me going even when the road was rough. Their belief in me gave me the strength to pursue this path, and I dedicate this achievement to them.

I also want to acknowledge the incredible camaraderie of my ACCA classmates. Together, we shared the highs and lows, the late-night study sessions, and the moments of doubt. More importantly I will definitely find a job after graduation and build my wealth over time. True enough I was able to quickly find a job as a junior audit & account assistant while pursuing the ACCA qualification. Compared to my peers I completed my qualification faster given the flexibility that the ACCA qualification offers. Of course, that is provided I passed in one seating for every examination. I am immensely grateful to the support from my then boyfriend who supported my journey ferrying me home after classes with his two legs.

Over the years with the ACCA qualification, I have continued to stay employed and relevant, more importantly with stable income growth. I am grateful to the ACCA qualification for the opportunities opened to me. I am also grateful to the mentors whom I've met along the way over the years in my career.
